Cowboys crash out to Packers as Lions beat Rams

The Dallas Cowboys suffered a devastating blow in the NFL play-offs as they were handed a crushing 48-32 loss by the Green Bay Packers, who were seeded seventh in the wildcard round. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions secured their spot in the next round with a narrow 24-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

The Packers, the NFL's youngest team, secured a spot in the playoffs on the final day of the regular season with a 9-8 record. They displayed complete dominance over the Cowboys, only allowing two late touchdowns.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Lions emerged victorious in a playoff game for the first time in 32 years. Led by quarterback Jared Goff, Detroit achieved a narrow win against his former team.

Jordan Love, the Packers' quarterback who took over this season following Aaron Rodgers' departure, had an outstanding playoff debut. He threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, leaving spectators in awe.

Aaron Jones, the running back, contributed significantly to the Packers' success with three rushing touchdowns and an impressive 118 yards on the ground. As a result, the Packers earned themselves a matchup against the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, endured a disastrous playoff game, surrendering the most points in franchise history. Quarterback Dak Prescott's two costly interceptions in the first half contributed to their downfall, with the home side falling behind 27-0 in the second quarter.

This defeat is likely to raise concerns about the future of Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. As a former Super Bowl winner with the Packers, McCarthy was hired to bring another NFL championship to the Cowboys, but their wait has now extended to 28 years.

Right from the beginning, the Packers displayed confidence as they chose to receive the ball and promptly scored a touchdown on their first drive. Aaron Jones rushed in from three yards, setting the tone for the game.

Prescott's day went from bad to worse as he threw an interception early on, allowing the Packers to take control of the game. Green Bay's offense faced little resistance, and Love connected with Dontayvion Wicks for a 20-yard touchdown pass, leaving Dallas corner Stephon Gilmore unable to stop him.

The Cowboys' woes continued when Prescott's pass was intercepted by Packers safety Darnell Savage, who returned it 64 yards for another touchdown, extending the Packers' lead to 27-0.

The Cowboys found themselves in their largest deficit at home in the post-season, but they managed to keep a glimmer of hope alive for the second half. Just before halftime, Prescott connected with Jake Ferguson for a one-yard touchdown pass.

After a field goal by the Cowboys, Jones rushed for his third touchdown, a nine-yard run that brought the score to 34-10.

Dallas' Tony Pollard also ran in a touchdown, but the Cowboys' defense couldn't stop Green Bay as Love threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Luke Musgrave.

Love remained composed and found Romeo Doubs for a three-yard touchdown pass, giving the visitors a commanding 32-point lead with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter.

The Packers eventually eased off, allowing Dallas to score two touchdowns - both from Prescott passes to Ferguson. However, it was too late for a miraculous comeback.

The Lions hosted their first playoff game since 1993 and will be back at Ford Field next week to face the winner of Monday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In addition to the matchup between Goff and his former team, the Rams, Sunday's game also marked Matthew Stafford's return to Detroit after the teams traded quarterbacks in 2021.

The Lions took an early lead in the explosive first half, with David Montgomery rushing for a one-yard touchdown. After a field goal by the Rams, Jahmyr Gibbs extended the Lions' lead to 14-3 with a 10-yard run.

Stafford brought the Rams back into the game with a perfectly thrown 50-yard touchdown pass to Puka Nacua.

Goff responded by connecting with Sam LaPorta for a two-yard touchdown pass, giving Detroit an 11-point advantage. However, the Rams quickly answered with Stafford finding Tutu Atwell for a 38-yard touchdown.

The Lions increased their lead to 10 points with a 54-yard field goal by Michael Badgley, but two field goals from Brett Maher brought the Rams within one point.
