Cristian Chivu named new Inter Milan head coach ahead of Club World Cup

Inter Milan have turned to a familiar face to usher in a new era, appointing Cristian Chivu as their new head coach. The former Romania international has signed a two-year deal that runs through June 30, 2027, returning to the club where he enjoyed a decorated playing career.
“Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team,” the club announced in an official statement Monday.
Chivu, 44, replaces Simone Inzaghi, who stepped down following Inter’s devastating 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germainin the Champions League final last month. Inzaghi has since taken over at Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
A Club Legend Returns
Chivu is no stranger to the Nerazzurri faithful. During his time as a player, he helped Inter to three Serie A titles and was part of the historic treble-winning squad that claimed the 2010 Champions League under José Mourinho.
His appointment marks a significant leap, however. Chivu only began his senior coaching career in February, when he took over Serie B side Parma, steering them to safety in Italy’s top flight after replacing Fabio Pecchia. Before that, he worked with Inter’s youth teams until last summer.
Chivu Grateful for Parma Chapter
Confirming his exit earlier on Monday, Parma thanked Chivu for his service. The coach expressed his appreciation on Instagram:
“I thank the club, staff, players and fans for having believed in me and our project,” Chivu wrote. “Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page [in Parma’s history] which will remain in my heart.”
Deal Details
Chivu is reportedly set to earn €2.5 million ($2.85 million) per season, a modest sum by elite coaching standards but reflective of his relatively untested profile at the top level. Inter had previously been linked with Como coach Cesc Fabregas, but talks reportedly broke down before the club turned to Chivu.
Eyes on the Club World Cup
Chivu's first task as Inter boss will be a big one: the FIFA Club World Cup, where Inter open their campaign next weekagainst Monterrey at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He inherits a squad that appeared exhausted and disjointed in the Champions League final defeat.
With the club aiming to bounce back from European disappointment and reassert dominance domestically and globally, all eyes will be on Chivu’s tactical approach and leadership in the high-stakes tournament.
A Bold Gamble
Chivu becomes the latest in a line of former players-turned-managers to return to their old clubs — following in the footsteps of Xavi at Barcelona, and Zidane at Real Madrid. Whether Inter’s gamble pays off will be closely watched as the new season begins.
