Czech Republic dominate Italy to set up United Cup semi-final clash with USA

The Czech Republic concluded Italy's pursuit of a third consecutive team competition title on Friday, decisively defeating them 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the United Cup, where they will face former champions, the United States.
Italy capped off an impressive 2024 season by winning both the men's Davis Cup and the women's Billie Jean King Cup titles, but they faltered in the $10 million mixed team event in the lead-up to this month's Australian Open.
Tomas Machac delivered a commanding performance, securing a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Flavio Cobolli in just 54 minutes, propelling the Czechs into their first semi-final in this tournament after previously exiting in the group stages on two occasions.
"I believe this level of tennis is the best I can achieve," Machac remarked.
"I am truly pleased to have played such a match today, particularly as it was a crucial point. I was surprised by my ability to perform flawlessly without errors. I did not allow him any chances to recover, which was essential.
"I aimed to maintain strong mental fortitude on the court, playing in a manner reminiscent of Novak (Djokovic)."
Karolina Muchova showcased her exceptional skills in the opening match at Ken Rosewall Arena, achieving a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Paolini, the runner-up at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
"I was determined to secure a point for the team, so I focused intently," Muchova, making her United Cup debut, stated after improving her record against the world number four to 5-0.
"Jasmine is an extraordinary player. It was a challenging match, and I knew I had to persevere until the end. She had numerous break point opportunities. I served effectively, and I am very pleased with my performance."
Kazakhstan will face Poland in the other semi-final scheduled for Saturday, with the final set to take place the following day.
