Damian Lillard joins 20,000-point club as Bucks defeat Spurs 132-119

Damian Lillard achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a season-high 40 points, surpassing the 20,000 career point mark. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo showcased his versatility with a triple-double as the Milwaukee Bucks dominated the San Antonio Spurs with a 132-119 victory on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Spurs were without Victor Wembanyama due to a sore right ankle.

Lillard acknowledged the significance of his accomplishment, emphasizing that reaching 20,000 points is a great achievement and places him in an exclusive group. He now joins the ranks of the 51 individuals in NBA history, and is the eighth active player, to achieve this milestone. Impressively, Lillard became the 17th-fastest player to reach this mark, achieving it in his 794th career game.

Bucks coach Adrian Griffin praised Lillard's offensive prowess, highlighting his shooting ability, floor-stretching capabilities, and his ability to apply pressure on opposing defenses. Lillard's offensive skills are well-rounded, as he possesses the strength and physicality to finish at the rim and exploit defensive weaknesses.

Among the active players who have surpassed 20,000 points, Lillard is joined by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, DeMar DeRozan, and Chris Paul. Notably, Lillard, James, Curry, and Harden are the only players in NBA history to achieve the combination of 20,000 points, 5,000 assists, and 2,000 3-pointers.

Reflecting on his journey, Lillard expressed gratitude for the obstacles he overcame throughout his career. He recalled the doubts he faced in high school, college, and even before entering the NBA. Despite the challenges, Lillard maintained a strong mentality and unwavering faith in himself, ultimately leading him to this remarkable milestone.

Antetokounmpo also had an exceptional performance, recording a career-high 16 assists, 14 rebounds, and a season-low 11 points. This marked his 37th career triple-double and his second of the season. His previous triple-double came in a 132-121 victory against the Atlanta Hawks on December 2nd.

Wembanyama was unable to face off against Antetokounmpo due to his injury, marking the second game the rookie has missed in his professional career. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich expressed optimism, stating that they don't expect the injury to be long-term. On the other hand, Milwaukee has been on a winning streak, going 5-0 during their six-game homestand. Their victory over the Spurs marked their 14th consecutive win at Fiserv Forum, their longest home winning streak since their 20-game run from April 19, 1990, to Jan. 8, 1991.

Contributing to the Bucks' success, Portis scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Middleton contributed 17 points, and Lopez recorded 14 points and six blocks. Meanwhile, the Spurs' Johnson recorded 28 points and 12 rebounds, Collins scored 22, and Vassell added 17. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they have now lost 20 of their last 21 games.

The game began with a basket from Collins, but the Bucks quickly took control, going on a dominant 21-1 run that lasted until midway through the first quarter.

Looking ahead, the Spurs will be visiting the Chicago Bulls on Thursday, while the Bucks will be hosting the Magic on the same day.
