Daniel Jones will start for the Giants when he returns - Coach Brain Daboll

Tyrod Taylor's performance as the New York Giants' quarterback has been impressive since stepping in for Daniel Jones. However, head coach Brian Daboll emphatically dismissed any notions of a quarterback controversy in East Rutherford during a press conference on Wednesday.

Daboll restated what he has been emphasizing for a while: Daniel Jones remains the team's starting quarterback. Daboll emphasized, "I've made this clear repeatedly, despite the number of times it's been asked."Jones, who secured a lucrative four-year, $160 million contract extension in the offseason following a stellar 2022 season, has been sidelined due to a neck injury sustained in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins.

In his absence, Tyrod Taylor, the experienced backup, took the helm. Taylor came close to defeating the Buffalo Bills on the road two weeks ago and played a significant role in the Giants' Week 7 victory against the Washington Commanders, resulting in a 14-7 win.

Taylor is expected to start for the third consecutive week, facing the New York Jets in the upcoming "Snoopy Bowl" at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Daboll confirmed this, as Jones' status remains unchanged from the previous week. Jones was listed as limited on the injury report on Wednesday but did not participate in team practices and has not yet received clearance for contact. This injury is distinct from his 2021 neck injury, according to Jones.

While Jones is unquestionably the franchise quarterback, Taylor has outperformed him this season when given the opportunity, boasting a quarterback rating of 50.1 compared to Jones' 39.0.

Taylor's performance against the Commanders, throwing for 279 yards and two touchdowns on 18 of 29 passing, helped break a four-game losing streak that had dampened the spirits of fans expecting the team to build on their 2022 playoff success.

Taylor expressed his comfort with the offense and the playmakers at his disposal, emphasizing his responsibility to distribute the ball effectively to his teammates. He acknowledged his role as Jones' backup and praised Jones as a team captain and leader.

In Jones' defense, the offensive line struggled at the start of the season, with Jones being sacked 28 times in five starts. Recent additions like Justin Pugh have helped improve the offensive line's performance, allowing Taylor more time in the pocket.

On the other hand, Taylor has excelled at using his mobility to escape collapsing pockets and connecting with receivers such as Wan’Dale Robinson and Darren Waller, who have seen increased production since Taylor took over as the quarterback.

Taylor nearly orchestrated a remarkable comeback against the Bills, with Waller's potential game-winning reception on the one-yard line in question due to potential interference.

The Giants have faith in Jones's ability to return and perform better with improved offensive line play and the return of Saquon Barkley to the offense. Until then, Taylor will continue to fulfill his role, aiming to keep the Giants on a positive trajectory.
