Daniil Medvedev urges revamp of ATP calendar

World number four Daniil Medvedev (28) has expressed the need for a reevaluation of the ATP Tour calendar, advocating for a structure that prioritizes Grand Slam and Masters 1000 events, while relegating the lower-tier ATP 250 tournaments to an optional timeframe later in the year.

Numerous players have raised concerns regarding the current calendar, with four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz noting that the demanding schedule hampers motivation throughout the year and heightens the risk of injuries.

Starting next season, seven of the nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments will be conducted over a span of 12 days, a change that was met with criticism from Stefanos Tsitsipas last week.

"This year, I focused solely on competing in major tournaments," Medvedev remarked to reporters following his victory over Alex De Minaur at the ATP Finals on Tuesday.

"I believe there should be a greater number of significant tournaments that serve as benchmarks for determining the top 10 players, such as the Masters 1000 events."

"Perform well in these tournaments, and you will secure your place. The schedule should be structured around these key events."

Reuters has reached out to the ATP Tour for a response.

Medvedev proposed that the premier tournaments be scheduled earlier in the year, stating: "Subsequently, the ATP 250 events could be arranged afterward for those who wish to continue competing."

"If you are performing well, you could conclude the season in October, participating in the Masters.

The results of tournaments held afterward should not be counted. If you feel the need for additional points for the Australian Open or require more match play, you can pursue that later."
