Davis, Hachimura propel Lakers to 116-110 win over Trail Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers displayed resilience and depth as they overcame the absence of LeBron James to secure a hard-fought victory against the Portland Trail Blazers, finishing with a score of 116-110. The win was highlighted by Anthony Davis' stellar performance, contributing 30 points and 13 rebounds, while Rui Hachimura showcased his clutch abilities by scoring eight of his 19 points in the final 3 minutes and 43 seconds of the game.

LeBron James, a key figure for the Lakers, was sidelined for the first time in the current season due to a bruised left calf sustained in a collision with Kevin Durant during the first quarter of their game against Phoenix on Friday night. Despite returning to that match, the Lakers opted to rest the 38-year-old star, considering their long-term objectives and a challenging schedule, including upcoming back-to-back games starting on Tuesday night.

Facing a Portland team eager to exploit James' absence, the Lakers' supporting cast, led by Davis, managed to maintain control. Austin Reaves, who contributed 18 points, emphasized the impact of having Anthony Davis on the court, stating, “Anytime he gets on the floor - you never want to have LeBron or anybody out, but anytime you’ve got Anthony Davis on the floor, you’ve got a chance. He changes the game.”

Cam Reddish played a crucial role in the first half, scoring 16 of his 18 points, while D'Angelo Russell orchestrated plays with 11 points and 11 assists. The Lakers, coming off a challenging 1-3 road trip, held off a resilient Portland side, securing a victory in their first game back.

Jerami Grant led the scoring for the Blazers with 23 points, and Shaedon Sharpe added 19. However, the Blazers struggled at the free-throw line, attempting only one free throw in the final three quarters, compared to the Lakers' 37 attempts.

Despite Portland closing in during the fourth quarter, the Lakers managed to secure the win with an 8-2 run and crucial free throws from Hachimura and Reaves in the final moments. Skylar Mays of the Blazers acknowledged the team's fight but emphasized the need to learn how to finish games.

Both teams faced roster challenges, with the Lakers missing Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, while the Blazers were without Malcolm Brogdon, Scott Henderson, and Anfernee Simons.

The game also saw noteworthy debuts, with Duop Reath, the 27-year-old rookie center for the Blazers, impressing with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Jamaree Bouyea, in his Blazers debut, contributed six points after signing a two-way contract earlier in the day.

The Trail Blazers will face the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night in the In-Season Tournament, while the Lakers will host the Memphis Grizzlies in their next matchup. The game showcased the depth and resilience of both teams, setting the stage for exciting matchups in the upcoming season.
