Dejounte Murray scored an impressive 32 points, contributing nine assists, propelling the Atlanta Hawks to a 126-120 victory over the struggling Detroit Pistons. This win extended the Pistons' losing streak to a daunting nine games.
The Hawks, competing in the Eastern Conference Group A tourney opener, displayed resilience and skill, securing a crucial victory. Meanwhile, the Pistons faced a setback, dropping to a 0-2 record in the tournament.
Saddiq Bey, facing his former team, played a pivotal role for the Hawks, especially in the second half, where he notched 17 of his 19 points. Bogdan Bogdanovic also made significant contributions with 17 points. Bey expressed the intensity of the tournament, likening it to a playoff game and emphasizing the need for aggression and focus to secure a win.
Notably absent from the game was Trae Young, who celebrated the birth of his second child on Monday. Despite Young's absence, Hawks coach Quin Snyder praised Murray for seamlessly stepping into a leadership role, stating, "I don't think (Murray) felt any extra pressure with Trae out - he just did what he does every night."
Marvin Bagley III led the Pistons with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie Ausar Thompson added 21. Despite Cade Cunningham's impressive 12 assists, his 4-for-14 shooting and six turnovers posed challenges for the Pistons.
The game unfolded as a closely contested battle, with the Hawks leading 97-91 entering the fourth quarter. Detroit mounted a comeback, with Cunningham's layup narrowing the gap to 111-110. Kevin Knox II's dunk then gave the Pistons a temporary lead at 117-116 with 2:01 left.
However, the Hawks responded decisively, with De'Andre Hunter and Clint Capela contributing crucial plays. Murray's free throws in the final moments secured a two-possession advantage for Atlanta.
The game was not without controversy, as Detroit believed they had a chance for a four-point play in the closing seconds. However, officials ruled that Murray fouled Alec Burks before his attempted 3-pointer.
Pistons coach Monty Williams emphasized the need to eliminate turnovers, stating, "We've got to stop using the young thing around here," challenging his team to rise above challenges and improve.
Looking ahead, the Hawks are set to host the New York Knicks, while the Pistons will face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday in a crucial tournament group stage game.
