Denis Law, Manchester United legend, passes away at 84

Manchester United legend and former Scotland international Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84, the Premier League club confirmed on Friday.
"It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace," shared his family in a statement released by Manchester United.
"We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.
"We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."
Law began his professional football career with Huddersfield Town but is best remembered for his iconic spell at Manchester United. During his 11 years at Old Trafford, he played a pivotal role in the club’s success, securing two league titles in 1965 and 1967, and lifting the European Cup in 1968. Law scored an astonishing 237 goals in 404 matches for the club, cementing his legacy as United’s third-highest scorer behind Wayne Rooney (253) and Sir Bobby Charlton (249).
Nicknamed "The King," Law became the only Scotsman to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or and the European Player of the Year award, both in 1964.
"Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84," the club said in a heartfelt statement.
"He will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit, and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.
"Our deepest condolences go out to Denis' family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more."
In addition to his achievements with United, Law had notable stints with Manchester City and Torino. On the international stage, he remains Scotland’s joint all-time leading scorer, netting 30 goals in 55 caps. He made his Scotland debut in 1958 at just 18 years old.
Manchester City also paid tribute to Law, tweeting, "The whole of Manchester, including everyone at City, is mourning with you. Rest in peace, Denis. Our thoughts are with Denis' family and friends at this difficult time."
In 2021, Law disclosed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
Denis Law’s impact on football, both for Manchester United and Scotland, will never be forgotten. His passion, talent, and contributions to the game will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, "The King."
