Denver Nuggets celebrate first NBA Championship with 119-107 win over the Lakers

The Denver Nuggets kicked off their NBA championship defense with a spectacular celebration, marked by the raising of their championship banner and the distribution of gold, diamond-encrusted rings. The festivities were capped with a 119-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener.
Jamal Murray emphasized the importance of focusing on the new season, despite the euphoria of last year's victory. The game showcased Nikola Jokic's triple-double performance, with the Nuggets gaining momentum from the pregame ceremony, allowing them to establish an 18-point lead early on.
Jokic commented on the team's control throughout the game, leading to a final score in their favor. He himself contributed 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. Murray added 21 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 20, Aaron Gordon had 15, and Michael Porter Jr. contributed 12.
The Lakers' starters all scored in double figures, with LeBron James leading with 21 points in 29 minutes, as his playing time is being carefully managed at the start of his 21st season.
A strong performance by the Lakers brought them within three points of the Nuggets in the fourth quarter. However, the Nuggets managed to hold them off, securing the victory with a 10-3 run following a timeout, featuring key 3-pointers by Murray and Porter.
The pregame ceremony was a highlight for the Nuggets, with players receiving their championship rings, complete with a mini championship banner that unfurled from one side. Nuggets coach Michael Malone expressed his gratitude for the championship hardware, symbolizing the previous season's success.
Although he cherished the moment, Malone also expressed the desire to focus on the new season. The night was filled with emotions, particularly in memory of his late father, Brendan Malone, a respected coach behind the Detroit Pistons' "Bad Boys" defenses in the late 1980s and early '90s.
The Nuggets, who boasted a 16-4 playoff record last season and swept the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, capped their championship run by defeating the Miami Heat in five games. The victory ignited a summer of celebrations in Denver and Nikola Jokic's hometown of Sombor, Serbia.
Jokic, despite leading the Nuggets to an NBA title after consecutive MVP seasons, was surprisingly omitted from TNT's graphic promoting the opening-night doubleheader. This graphic featured other stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Jayson Tatum, a choice that stirred controversy and led to an apology from Charles Barkley.
Barkley also expressed his belief that the Nuggets will face challenges in their quest to repeat as champions, emphasizing the need to replace key players and adapt to the heightened expectations.
In their next games, the Lakers will host the Phoenix Suns, while the Nuggets will play the Memphis Grizzlies.
