Djokovic, Alcaraz heap praise on 'incredible' Joao Fonseca

Novak Djokovic, at the age of 37, recognizes a reflection of his younger self in the promising 18-year-old Joao Fonseca, expressing enthusiasm for the emergence of a top talent from Brazil.
Fonseca garnered significant attention at Melbourne Park after defeating Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open, marking his Grand Slam debut on Tuesday evening.
Djokovic, who is pursuing his 11th title at Melbourne Park following a victory over qualifier Jaime Faria on Wednesday, mentioned that he met Fonseca for the first time shortly after his second-round match.
"I have been closely monitoring his ascent, and I admire his performance during crucial moments. He exhibits bravery, strikes the ball cleanly, and demonstrates versatility as a player," stated the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
"I can see elements of my own game in his style, particularly from my own youth when I played with a certain carefree abandon, showcasing my potential."
"He undoubtedly possesses the talent to achieve great success, as evidenced by his performance on a significant stage last night. The future looks promising for him, provided he continues on this trajectory."
Djokovic expressed admiration for Fonseca's ability to handle the pressure of competing in a night match on one of Melbourne Park's prominent courts on Tuesday.
"This is an exciting time for Brazil, as well as for the global tennis community, because it is remarkable for such a young individual to perform so well on a major platform," he remarked.
"It is crucial for our sport to have a player of high caliber emerging from Brazil. I believe they have not seen a player of this level since Guga Kuerten."
Djokovic also observed two other Grand Slam debutants in his initial matches at his 20th Australian Open, with both 21-year-old Faria and American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy managing to take a set from him.
"I have experienced numerous matches throughout my career where I face opponents I have never encountered before, and they often come out aggressively with little to lose," he noted.
This match served as yet another significant challenge. It was a three-hour contest, once again facing off against younger competitors. I am pleased with how I concluded the match, demonstrating a positive attitude and a strong mindset.
'Incredible' Fonseca
Alcaraz expressed his admiration as well.
"What can I say? It was simply incredible. The manner in which he played his first Grand Slam match against a top-10 player is astonishing," the Spaniard remarked after advancing to the third round in Melbourne.
"His approach to the match, his ability to manage nerves, and his overall performance have been exceptional.
"He is destined for greatness," he continued, referring to the 112th-ranked Fonseca's promising future.
"This is just the start of the year, just one victory in a Grand Slam, but he is on the path to success.
"We will soon see Joao Fonseca's name among the elite players in the world."
Fonseca reinforced his status as a NextGen champion by securing an ATP Challenger Tour title in Canberra earlier this month.
He subsequently navigated through the qualifying rounds at Melbourne Park and is currently on a 14-match winning streak, with his next challenge being Italian Lorenzo Sonego, ranked 55th.
"Certainly, the NextGen title has bolstered my confidence. I am playing excellent tennis, and I intend to savor this moment and perform at my best," Fonseca stated following his victory over Russia's Rublev.
"I am playing well, which contributes to my confidence.
"When I arrived here, my primary objective was to qualify for the main draw. Naturally, my aspirations have grown since then," he added.
"I desire more and more."
