Djokovic faces tough Australian Open draw, Sinner placed away from top contenders

World number one Jannik Sinner has been matched against the powerful Nicolas Jarry as he begins his title defense at the Australian Open, while Novak Djokovic is on track to potentially face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.

Sinner, hailing from Italy, triumphed over Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final last year in Melbourne, marking his first major victory, and subsequently added the US Open and ATP Finals titles to his achievements.

However, the top seed's title defense is overshadowed by a doping controversy, having tested positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March. Although he was cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, he is currently awaiting the outcome of an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency.

At 23 years old, Sinner may encounter Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas or Australian Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals, with a potential semi-final matchup against Medvedev.

On the other hand, Serbia's Djokovic will begin his campaign against American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy, facing a significant challenge as he aims for his 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam victory.

Djokovic is projected to meet world number 10 Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round and Spain's Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, with a possible semi-final clash against Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz will commence his tournament against Kazakhstan's Alexander Shevchenko, who recently achieved a morale-boosting victory over world number 11 Tsitsipas at the United Cup.

Zverev is set to compete against French wildcard Lucas Pouille.

In the women's draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka will start her title defense against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens from the United States.

The Belarusian top seed aims to become the first woman since Martina Hingis (1997-99) to secure three consecutive titles.

World number three Coco Gauff faces a challenging opening match against 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

Conversely, second seed Iga Swiatek has been assigned a more manageable opponent in Czech doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova, who is ranked 46th.

Nonetheless, the Polish star will have to contend with sixth seed Elena Rybakina and eighth seed Emma Navarro in her section of the draw.

Jasmine Paolini, a two-time major runner-up and the fourth seed, is set to compete against a qualifier, while fifth seed Zheng Qinwen from China, who was defeated by Sabalenka in the final of the previous year, will also face a qualifier.

In another significant matchup, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka will begin her campaign against Caroline Garcia, marking a rematch of their first-round encounter from last year, which was won by the French player.

If the tournament unfolds as anticipated, Sabalenka may encounter Zheng in the quarter-finals and Gauff in the semi-finals, with Swiatek likely to face Paolini in the other semi-final.

The Australian Open is scheduled to commence on Sunday.
