Djokovic set for Machac challenge, Osaka set to face familiar foe Bencic at Australian Open

The third round of the Australian Open is set to commence on Friday, featuring defending champion Aryna Sabalenka (26) as she takes the court on Rod Laver Arena, while Novak Djokovic (37) continues his pursuit of an 11th title.

Among the other prominent players competing on the showcase courts are Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Coco Gauff, while familiar rivals Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic will face off on John Cain Arena.

Highlighting the women's matches is the encounter between Osaka and Bencic. Osaka, a two-time champion, has made her return to the tour following a 15-month maternity leave that began in January of the previous year. She is beginning to display the exceptional talent that led her to victory in 2019 and 2021.

A revitalized Osaka has already avenged her first-round defeat at last year's Australian Open by triumphing over French player Caroline Garcia, and she subsequently eliminated Czech 20th seed Karolina Muchova.

Osaka will confront a well-known opponent in Belinda Bencic, who has a 3-2 advantage in their head-to-head record. The Japanese player welcomes the challenge posed by the former Olympic gold medalist, who also made her return to competition after giving birth in April.

"I enjoy it. Competing against top opponents is where I perform my best tennis," Osaka expressed to the media. "As I face increasingly skilled opponents in the later rounds, it becomes more intriguing, as it feels like a clash of two Titans."

In the men's matches, Djokovic aims to seek retribution against Czech player Tomas Machac, who surprised the 24-time major champion during the semi-finals of the Geneva Open last year.

Machac, who is 13 years younger than Djokovic, has gained confidence since that match, having secured a gold medal in mixed doubles at the Olympics.

Djokovic has already faced challenges, dropping sets against Nishesh Basavareddy and Jaime Faria, and the 37-year-old can anticipate another demanding match against Machac, who is striving to reach the fourth round for the first time.

"It's always challenging to compete against such opponents, as it requires mental fortitude to maintain that level," Djokovic remarked after advancing to the third round.

It is clear that one cannot ascertain whether they will succumb to the pressures of competing on the center court or if they will respond in a contrasting manner, a scenario that I believe both of my adversaries in the initial rounds experienced.

The American third seed, Gauff, is set to face the 30th seed Leylah Fernandez, and the 2023 US Open champion recognizes the necessity of performing at her highest level to overcome the Canadian, who was the runner-up at the 2021 US Open.

"Clearly, I need to improve my serving. She will be aggressive, as that is her style of play. She moves exceptionally well and will execute some impressive shots," Gauff remarked.

"I anticipate her to deliver an outstanding performance. I can only hope to match that level."
