Dodgers dominate Mets to take the lead in the MLB playoff series

Shohei Ohtani, Enrique Hernandez, and Max Muncy each hit home runs, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-0 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday, thereby taking the lead in their Major League Baseball playoff series.
Ohtani's three-run homer, which landed just inside the right-field line in the eighth inning, was a highlight, while Hernandez contributed with a two-run shot in the sixth and Muncy added a solo homer in the ninth, energizing the Los Angeles offense.
This decisive win granted the Dodgers a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series, which will resume on Thursday in New York.
The victor of this series will advance to face either the New York Yankees or the Cleveland Guardians in the World Series.
Muncy, who walked three times, recorded two hits, and scored twice, hit his 13th career playoff home run, tying a club record.
"It was a solid night," Muncy remarked. "While the home run is certainly exciting, the priority is getting on base for my teammates, allowing them the opportunity to drive me in."
The Dodgers' hitters exhibited remarkable patience at the plate, waiting for optimal pitches to secure home runs and crucial hits.
"We remain focused and disciplined within the strike zone, allowing us to capitalize on good pitches," Muncy explained. "Consistently doing this leads to favorable outcomes."
Los Angeles pitcher Walker Buehler, a 30-year-old right-hander who faced challenges this year following ligament replacement surgery in 2022 and missing the 2023 season, struck out six batters over four scoreless innings.
"It has been a lengthy and challenging journey for me," Buehler stated. "When the stakes are high, everything else diminishes in importance. I felt the ball was moving well for me."
Four Dodgers pitchers kept the Mets batters at bay, completing a four-hit shutout with a total of 13 strikeouts.
"Achieving shutouts in the playoffs is no easy feat," Buehler noted.
The Dodgers are aiming for their fourth World Series appearance in eight seasons and their first MLB championship since 2020, while the Mets, who last reached the World Series in 2015, have not claimed the MLB title since 1986.
The Dodgers commenced the scoring in the second inning when Muncy drew a walk, advanced to second base following Teoscar Hernandez's fielder's choice, moved to third on a ground out by Gavin Lux, and ultimately crossed home plate on an infield single by Will Smith.
Tommy Edman then contributed with a sacrifice fly, allowing Teoscar Hernandez to score from third, extending the Dodgers' lead to 2-0.
Buehler managed to strike out Francisco Lindor, the Mets' leadoff hitter, thereby escaping a bases-loaded predicament in the second inning. In the third inning, Mets pitcher Luis Severino also navigated a bases-loaded challenge when Lux grounded out, concluding the threat.
The Dodgers increased their advantage in the sixth inning when Edman hit a single, followed by a powerful home run from 33-year-old Puerto Rican outfielder Enrique Hernandez, marking his 15th career playoff homer.
"I love playing in October," he remarked. "It just brings out the best in me."
Los Angeles continued to score in the eighth inning when Will Smith walked, Enrique Hernandez recorded a single, and Ohtani hit a home run that was upheld after a video review, extending the Dodgers' lead to 7-0.
Muncy capped off the scoring with a solo home run in the ninth, while Ben Casparius successfully retired the final three Mets batters in the same inning.
