Dodgers secure MLB season-opener victory over Cubs with decisive three-run fifth inning

The LA Dodgers, crowned the 2024 World Series champions, commenced their season with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs during the season opener held at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, where Shohei Ohtani recorded two hits.
The Dodgers broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning, following a period of dominance from both starting pitchers. Meanwhile, the Cubs' offense struggled to find its rhythm, managing only three hits throughout the nine innings.
Ohtani, the reigning MVP and a celebrated figure in Japan, was the main attraction for the audience at the Tokyo Dome, although his ground-out to second base proved to be an anticlimactic moment in the season's first game.
With both Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman sidelined before the match, the Dodgers relied heavily on Ohtani, who faced a slow start as both teams found it challenging to generate hits early on.
Another notable Japanese player, Seiya Suzuki, experienced an early setback when he broke his bat while facing Los Angeles' Yoshinobu Yamamoto, hinting at a potential pitcher's duel in the Japanese capital.
The game's first run came in the third inning when Chicago catcher Miguel Amaya hit a double into the gap, allowing Dansby Swanson to score from second base.
The initial stages of the game were dominated by Chicago and their starting pitcher Shota Imanaga, who delivered four shutout innings (2 strikeouts, 0 hits, 4 walks) before being replaced by Ben Brown at the start of the fifth inning, a change that was anticipated due to the shortened spring training for both teams.
The Dodgers capitalized on this pitching change. Andy Pages reached base, followed by Ohtani securing his first hit of the night. After a strikeout by Brown and a single from Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernandez hit a powerful shot to right field that Ian Happ could not catch, allowing Pages to score and tying the game at 1-1.
A mismanaged double play by the Cubs allowed the Dodgers to take the lead, as a wayward throw contributed to the situation. Will Smith compounded Chicago's struggles in the fifth inning by hitting a single into left field, which enabled Hernandez to round third and score, increasing the Dodgers' advantage to 3-1. Although Brown managed to conclude the inning with a strikeout against Max Muncy, the damage had already been inflicted.
As the game progressed to the ninth inning, the Cubs found themselves trailing by two runs. Leading off for the Dodgers, Ohtani recorded his second hit of the evening, finishing the game with a 2-5 performance that included a double. He advanced to third base after the first out, and Hernandez followed with a powerful RBI single, further extending the lead.
Tanner Scott took the mound for Los Angeles in the bottom of the ninth, swiftly securing three outs to clinch a 4-1 victory, showcasing a strong pitching display from the Dodgers.
The two teams will face off again on Wednesday for the final match of the Tokyo Series, where Roki Sasaki is set to make his major league debut with the Dodgers after signing from Japan during the off-season.
The MLB season for the remaining 28 teams will commence next Thursday, marking the traditional opening day.
