Donovan Mitchell shines as Cavs defeat Hawks but crash out of In-Season Tournament

Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers put forth an all-out effort to secure a spot in the NBA In-Season Tournament, but despite their strong performance, it was the New York Knicks who ultimately outshone them.

In a captivating display, Mitchell showcased his talent with an impressive 40-point performance, complemented by Evan Mobley's remarkable contribution of 17 points, a career-high 19 rebounds, and an astounding seven blocks. This outstanding display propelled the Cavaliers to a triumphant 128-105 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on a Tuesday night, marking the conclusion of their pool play in the inaugural tournament.

The Cavs, concluding with a 3-1 record and securing the second place in East Group A, earnestly chased a wild-card entry into the eight-team knockout round. However, despite their victorious effort, they narrowly missed advancing due to point differentials, falling short as four other teams clinched their positions.

The Knicks, a team that had eliminated the Cavs in the previous season's playoffs, managed to clinch a wild-card spot by defeating Charlotte 115-91, edging past Cleveland and sealing their place in the knockout round.

Reflecting on the tournament, Mitchell remarked, “While our aim was to secure the championship and the additional rewards, the smaller victories and progress we've made in the past few days are crucial building blocks. Although we fell short of this particular championship, our focus now shifts to what lies ahead."

Despite the tournament title slipping away, the Cavaliers found solace in their improving health status, notably Mitchell's standout performance—shooting 14 of 25 and securing 11 rebounds—in a game that held significant regular-season importance.

Darius Garland's 19-point contribution coupled with the Cavs' strong defensive strategy limited the high-scoring Hawks, who had previously scored 152 points in a single game, showcasing Cleveland's resilience and adaptability.

While the Hawks, led by De'Andre Hunter with 18 points and a courageous performance despite a recurring injury, concluded the tournament with a 1-3 record, Trae Young struggled with a 3-of-14 shooting performance, managing 13 points and 10 assists.

Mitchell, having faced recent struggles shooting just 8 of 35 in the prior two games after returning from a hamstring injury, kickstarted his game with a remarkable 41-feet buzzer-beating 3-pointer, setting the tone for his outstanding performance throughout the game.

With the Cavs trailing by a significant 20-point margin, Atlanta's coach Quin Snyder opted to pull out his starters with 3:54 left, seeking to regroup. In contrast, Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff persisted with his initial lineup, hoping to widen the lead further and secure a stronger position for advancement.

Mitchell acknowledged this, expressing, “Balancing the desire to win and respect for the game was a challenge, especially when their starters were pulled out.
