Doping controversy takes spotlight as world number one Sinner defeats Jarry at Australian Open

Jannik Sinner (23) commenced his title defense at the Australian Open with a victory over Nicolas Jarry (29), winning 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1 on Monday. This match highlighted the contrasting doping histories of the two players.

As the world number one, Sinner managed to avoid suspension despite failing two drug tests last March. He faced a formidable challenge from the powerful Chilean, Jarry, who had previously served an 11-month ban for doping in 2020.

Prior to the match, Jarry expressed to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera his desire for the same level of support from tennis authorities that Sinner received following his own doping issues.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny surrounding doping, Sinner's performance on the court remains unaffected. His victory over world number 36 Jarry marked his 16th consecutive win and his 15th at hardcourt Grand Slam events.

"I am very, very happy to be back here, so thank you all for coming," Sinner addressed the audience. "The atmosphere has been incredible. Jarry is an exceptional player with immense potential. I am pleased with how I managed the challenging circumstances in the first two sets and am glad to advance to the next round."

Jarry proved to be a tough opponent, maintaining his serve throughout the initial two sets before faltering in the tiebreaks. Sinner clinched the first tiebreak with an ace after creating four set points through effective net play. Although Jarry saved two set points in the second tiebreak, he ultimately succumbed on the third with a wayward backhand.

Sinner effectively secured the match by breaking Jarry's serve in the second game of the final set, subsequently serving out the match without dropping a point. The Italian received a warm reception from the crowd as he exchanged a brief handshake with Jarry at the net.

Next, Sinner will face local wildcard Tristan Schoolkate for a chance to progress to the third round.

Sinner was exonerated of any misconduct last year by a doping tribunal, which accepted his assertion that the anabolic substance clostebol had entered his body through massages administered by his former physiotherapist.

As a result, his outcomes, prize money, and ranking points from the ATP Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells were annulled.

A provisional suspension was imposed following each positive test; however, Sinner was permitted to continue competing after his team submitted urgent appeals.

The details of the case remained confidential until August.

In 2020, Jarry received a ban from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after testing positive for two anabolic substances. Nevertheless, the governing body acknowledged his claim that he had unknowingly consumed multi-vitamins containing the banned substances based on his doctor's advice.

Four months prior to the sanction, the ITF revealed that he had been provisionally suspended due to failing drug tests.
