Duran the hero as Aston Villa record historic Champions League win over Bayern Munich

Prior to the match, fireworks illuminated Villa Park, yet Bayern Munich maintained their composure, swiftly gaining control of the ball and demonstrating effective passing.

Joshua Kimmich stood out during the early exchanges, although his pass to Serge Gnabry failed to yield results as the winger's attempted cutback to Harry Kane was unsuccessful.

The Villans displayed commendable discipline and made their first significant advance forward at the 15-minute mark, with Kim Min-Jae rising to connect with Lucas Digne’s cross ahead of Ollie Watkins.

Watkins consistently troubled Dayot Upamecano, and after escaping a foul earlier, the French defender received a yellow card for pulling him down in the 22nd minute.

Villa Park erupted shortly thereafter when a set piece led to Jaden Philogene setting up Pau Torres for a close-range finish, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

Further frustration ensued as Jacob Ramsey was forced to leave the field due to injury, although there was a moment of relief when Gnabry sent his shot wide after being played in by Konrad Laimer.

Michael Olise then produced a spectacular curling effort that Emiliano Martinez expertly tipped over the bar.

Vincent Kompany opted to bring on Jamal Musiala at the start of the second half, but the home side remained resolute, with Torres blocking two quick attempts from Olise.

Unai Emery faced a setback when Amadou Onana was forced to leave the field due to injury around the hour mark; however, his defense held strong, as Martínez managed to secure Gnabry’s latest attempt, followed by Torres intercepting Musiala’s shot.

Despite the high-profile substitutions made by Bayern, it was Villa’s Duran who proved to be the game-changer from the bench, seizing on Torres’ forward pass and leaving Manuel Neuer helpless with a superb finish.

In a dramatic conclusion, Martinez made crucial saves against Gnabry and Kane, ensuring a memorable victory for Villa—marking their second win in as many UCL matches—and extending their unbeaten streak to seven games across all competitions.

Additionally, they handed Bayern their first defeat in 42 matches at this stage of the UCL, as well as their inaugural loss under the management of Vincent Kompany.
