Eagles battle past Packers in NFL's first season game in Brazil

Saquon Barkley (27) delivered an impressive performance, scoring three touchdowns to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Friday, marking the inaugural regular-season NFL game held in South America.
Barkley, who signed with the Eagles in March after spending six seasons with the New York Giants, carried the ball 24 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to catching two passes for 23 yards and one touchdown in this historic matchup.
"It was crucial for me to get started," Barkley remarked. "I just needed that initial tackle to regain my momentum."
With this achievement, Barkley joined Terrell Owens as the only players to score three touchdowns in their debut for the Eagles.
The contest, dubbed the "Love Hurts" game, featured a thrilling offensive showdown between Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, taking place at the Neo Quimica Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Hurts completed 20 of 34 passes for 278 yards, recording two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Love connected on half of his 34 attempts for 260 yards, also throwing two touchdown passes and one interception before suffering an ankle injury late in the game.
"It was an exciting game, with plenty of back-and-forth action," stated Eagles receiver A.J. Brown. "Given that it was the first game, we anticipated some challenges, but we made the necessary adjustments, and it ultimately came down to executing plays."
Hurts launched a 67-yard touchdown pass to Brown early in the third quarter, allowing Philadelphia to take a 24-19 lead.
However, two penalties on third down by the Eagles aided Green Bay's 70-yard scoring drive, culminating in Love's 2-yard touchdown pass to Christian Watson, which allowed the Packers to regain the lead at 26-24.
Following an interception thrown by Love, Barkley scored on a 2-yard run, giving the Eagles a 31-26 advantage. Brayden Narveson then kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7:52 left in the game, narrowing the Packers' deficit to 31-29.
Hurts and Barkley orchestrated a remarkable 67-yard drive that spanned 16 plays and consumed over seven minutes. Jake Elliott's 21-yard field goal extended the Eagles' lead, leaving the Packers with only 27 seconds to attempt a comeback.
In the final moments of the game, Love completed a 33-yard pass to Jayden Reed, advancing into Eagles territory. However, he sustained a left ankle injury on the subsequent play, and Malik Willis was sacked two plays later, concluding the match.
When inquired about the seriousness of Love's injury, Packers coach Matt LaFleur stated, "I don't know."
LaFleur expressed confidence that the team's failure to convert scoring opportunities, such as settling for three short field goals instead of touchdowns, contributed to their defeat.
"I challenged everyone. We must learn from this," LaFleur remarked. "There were numerous opportunities we failed to seize, and when that happens, you end up losing."
The Eagles also expressed frustration over missed opportunities, with Devonte Smith, who recorded seven receptions for 84 yards, commenting, "We were just shooting ourselves in the foot, both offensively and defensively, but we persevered. Sloppy games like this occur, but it is all about how you respond."
This game marked the first Friday matchup since 1970 during the NFL's opening week and was the first of five games scheduled outside U.S. venues, which includes three games in London in October and a November game in Munich, Germany.
Hurts fumbled and was intercepted during the Eagles' initial two possessions, yet Green Bay could only convert their advantageous situations into field goals.
In response, Hurts led the Eagles on a 70-yard drive over 11 plays, culminating in an 18-yard touchdown pass to Barkley, who made the catch over a defender, giving Philadelphia a 7-6 lead.
"I fought through contact, and Jalen delivered a great pass," Barkley stated.
