Edu Gaspar resigns as Arsenal sporting director

Arsenal has officially announced the resignation of Edu Gaspar from his position as the club's sporting director.

The Brazilian is set to embark on a new venture, reportedly joining Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis in a role that will involve overseeing the Greek businessman's network of clubs, which includes Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

Reflecting on his time at Arsenal, Edu stated, "It has been a remarkable journey. I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with outstanding colleagues across the men's, women's, and youth teams, particularly Mikel (Arteta), who has become a dear friend. It is now time for me to seek a new challenge. Arsenal will always hold a special place in my heart."

Edu's exit is attributed to the new project he is pursuing, which aligns with his aspirations for professional growth. Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke expressed gratitude for Edu's significant contributions, stating, "We respect Edu's decision and appreciate his immense dedication to advancing the club."

Kroenke further emphasized the importance of change and evolution within the organization, reaffirming the club's commitment to its strategic goals and pursuit of major trophies. He noted that the succession plan will reflect this ongoing ambition.

Edu, a member of Arsene Wenger's legendary 'Invincibles' squad, returned to Arsenal in 2019 as technical director. Since 2022, he has overseen both the men's and women's teams, as well as youth development.

Alongside coach Mikel Arteta, Edu played a pivotal role in the recent restructuring and revitalization of Arsenal, which has seen the club re-emerge as a contender for the Premier League title in the past two years.
