Egypt score six as Nigeria suffers setback in World Cup Qualifiers

In the opening match of their World Cup qualifying campaign, Mohamed Salah showcased his prowess by scoring four goals, propelling Egypt to a decisive 6-0 victory over Djibouti in Cairo. Salah's stellar performance elevated his goal tally for Egypt to 53 in 93 appearances, marking a strong start for Egypt in their quest for a spot in the 2026 finals after missing out on the Qatar World Cup last year.
Meanwhile, Nigeria, missing the services of the injured Victor Osimhen, faced an unexpected setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lesotho, a team ranked 113 places below them. Lesotho took a surprising lead with Motlomelo Mkhwanazi's goal, but Nigeria managed to equalize through Semi Ajayi in a rainy Uyo. Despite relentless pressure, Nigeria couldn't secure a win, putting coach Jose Peserio under significant pressure just two months before their African Cup of Nations finals participation.
Mozambique secured the first away victory of the African qualifying campaign, defeating Botswana 3-2 in Group G, with Jonathan Muiomo scoring the winner. In Group C, Algeria, the favorites, had an unconvincing 3-1 home win over Somalia, leading to key players like Riyad Mahrez and Amine Gouiri being substituted at halftime.
Other notable results included Gabon overcoming a goal deficit to beat Kenya 2-1, Burundi edging the Gambia 3-2 in Tanzania due to stadium limitations, Sudan and Togo playing to a 1-1 draw in Libya, and a goalless draw between the Cape Verde Islands and Angola in Group D.
The African qualifiers, spanning the first two rounds from Wednesday to next Tuesday, will resume in June. With nine groups, the group winners earn direct qualification for the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, while the four best runners-up have a chance through a two-tier play-off system.
