Egypt secures semi-finals spot after beating Paraguay on penalties

Egypt navigated through a challenging group that included the highly regarded Spain and faced a Paraguay team that had allowed more goals than any other quarterfinalist.

Despite the South American team's evident defensive vulnerabilities, the high stakes of the match resulted in a cautious start, with both teams reluctant to take significant risks.

The Pharaohs missed a critical opportunity just after the half-hour mark when Mahmoud Saber failed to convert a one-on-one chance against Paraguay's goalkeeper, Roberto Fernández, marking the first real scoring opportunity of the quarter final.

Carlos Jara Saguier's concerns were alleviated as his team reached halftime without further incidents, even managing to register more shots than their African counterparts, though they did not pose a serious threat to score.

As expected, the Paraguayan defense came under scrutiny again after the break. Exploiting the ample space on the right flank, Ahmed Sayed set up Ibrahim Adel for a close-range shot, but the latter completely misfired, missing the ball entirely.

At the opposite end, Marcelo Pérez tested Egyptian goalkeeper Hamza Alaa with a powerful shot, forcing him to make a save as Paraguay regained control of the match.

Subsequently, La Albirroja gained momentum and broke the tie in the 71st minute with a stylish goal. Julio Enciso's precise pass found Diego Gómez, who calmly finished into the bottom corner.

As the clock ticked down and their Olympic hopes were on the line, Egypt fought back and equalized in the 88th minute. Adel redeemed himself with a superb header into the near corner after a perfect cross from Zizo.

The match went into extra time, with both teams visibly fatigued as penalties loomed. Egypt came close to securing victory before that, but a rebound by Adel was pushed wide by Fernández, setting the stage for a penalty shootout.

Paraguay faltered first, as Pérez's penalty was saved brilliantly by Alaa. This gave Egypt the advantage, and they capitalized with a flawless shootout, culminating in Adel scoring the winning penalty to secure their spot in the Olympic football tournament semi-finals for the first time since 1964.
