Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 Borussia Dortmund: Dortmund's struggles continue with loss to hosts

Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-0 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, marking their third consecutive Bundesliga loss and deepening the crisis surrounding the Ruhr Valley club.

The disappointing result adds to the mounting pressure on Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, who retained the backing of the club’s leadership earlier this week despite a midweek loss to struggling Holstein Kiel.

Dortmund started brightly with an early chance, but Serhou Guirassy's ninth-minute header struck the post, leaving the visitors empty-handed. Just nine minutes later, Eintracht capitalized on a swift counterattack, with Hugo Ekitike starting the move and finishing it off to put the hosts ahead.

Eintracht, missing star striker Omar Marmoush due to ongoing transfer discussions, nearly doubled their lead four minutes later. Ansgar Knauff’s curling shot struck the post, denying the home side an immediate second goal. Reports suggest Manchester City is close to signing Marmoush, who congratulated his teammates on the pitch after the game in what appeared to be a farewell moment in front of the home crowd.

Despite Dortmund’s efforts to level the match, they struggled to break through Eintracht's defense. Serhou Guirassy was at the center of Dortmund’s push but failed to convert opportunities, even receiving a booking after two penalty appeals were waved off.

Eintracht sealed their victory in the second half when Oscar Hojlund exploited a defensive lapse to score, handing Dortmund their third straight league defeat in 2024.

Midfielder Pascal Gross reflected on the loss, saying, "At the end of the day, football is a results-based sport, and we could not get a result again today. It was a decent performance from us in the second half, but that has to be the standard. The performance was alright, but that should be the norm. We did not win the game, and at the end of the day, we cannot get anything out of this game."

The victory marked Eintracht’s third consecutive Bundesliga win, solidifying their third-place position in the standings with 36 points—just two behind Bayer Leverkusen in second, who face Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s struggles leave them languishing in 10th place with just 25 points.

Dortmund will now look to regroup ahead of a crucial Champions League clash against Bologna on Tuesday.
