Elina Svitolina aims to bring 'a little light' to Ukraine with Australian Open run

Elina Svitolina, aged 30, expressed her desire to bring "a little light" to the Ukrainian populace following her decisive victory over a Russian opponent in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday.

The 28th seed triumphed over Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, paving the way for a match against American Madison Keys.

In line with the sentiments of other Ukrainian athletes, Svitolina refrained from shaking hands with her Russian rival due to the ongoing conflict, and she inscribed "The spirit of Ukraine" on a television camera lens after her 6-4, 6-1 win.

"I strive to embody this fighting spirit and represent it as well," Svitolina remarked to the media.

"These times are exceedingly challenging for Ukraine. It has been nearly three years since the war began.

"Every day, Ukrainians carry a heavy burden on their shoulders.

"For me, discovering a way to secure victories and to bring a glimmer of hope for the Ukrainian people is a responsibility I feel deeply."

She added, "To convey the spirit of resistance is the least I can offer."

The 30-year-old from Odesa indicated that she could not envision herself shaking hands with a Russian in the foreseeable future, even if the conflict were to conclude.

"I don't foresee that happening, as it evokes a profoundly distressing feeling," she stated.

"I would not wish this experience upon anyone. Waking up to the news of friends lost on the front lines, killed by Russian soldiers, is an unbearable weight on my heart."

When asked if the new U.S. President Donald Trump could influence the situation, Svitolina replied, "I believe we should allow him to take the lead."

"It's a complex issue. There are numerous discussions about what might transpire, whether he could resolve the conflict swiftly or not.

"We could debate this endlessly, but the truth is that no one truly knows what the future holds. We are simply waiting patiently for that moment."

Event organizers displayed a message on large screens at the center court, informing attendees that no handshake would occur and requesting "respect in these difficult circumstances."

Svitolina has advanced to the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park for the third time, marking her first appearance in this stage in six years.

She is set to compete against Keys for a chance to enter the semi-finals.

Svitolina has previously reached the semi-finals of Grand Slam tournaments on three occasions: at Wimbledon in 2019 and 2023, as well as the US Open in 2019, but she has yet to achieve this feat in Australia.

Keys, who made her first Grand Slam semi-final appearance at the 2015 Australian Open, triumphed over the 2023 runner-up Elena Rybakina with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a match lasting 1 hour and 49 minutes.

"It's hard to believe that it was 10 years ago, but I am truly proud of my performance today," remarked Keys, who also reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne in 2018 and 2022.

"She elevated her game in the second set and showcased some exceptional tennis," Keys noted, acknowledging her strong form coming into Melbourne Park after winning the Adelaide warm-up event.

"I am genuinely happy to still be competing at this level and playing good tennis after all these years."
