Emma Raducanu breezes past Shelby Rogers into Australian Open second round

Emma Raducanu, a former US Open champion at the age of 21, showcased her remarkable skills with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Shelby Rogers, a 31-year-old American player. This triumph marks a significant step for Raducanu as she strives to regain her momentum in her career at the Australian Open.
In 2021, the British player shocked the tennis world by emerging victorious at Flushing Meadows as a qualifier. However, her performance took a downturn in 2022, and she faced a series of injuries in 2023. Throughout her career, she has only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam on one other occasion.
A year ago in Melbourne, she displayed her resilience by winning a round shortly after undergoing knee surgery to remove a cyst. Later in the year, she required a wrist operation.
Currently ranked 296 due to an eight-month hiatus caused by ankle and wrist injuries, she expressed confidence before the tournament, stating that her skills were too exceptional to not succeed.
During her match against the 161st-ranked Rogers, Raducanu exhibited flashes of her best performance, successfully converting three out of five break points.
Her victory earned her a second-round match against China's unseeded Wang Yafan.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared with reporters, "Last year, I arrived here in a wheelchair. I only started practicing three days before the match. The entire process was incredibly stressful, and we were uncertain if I would be able to compete here."
She continued, "This year, there is a sense of calm. It's remarkable to be free from wrist pain. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I would ever reach this stage."
"I endured pain for a long time. I played continuously from before the US swing in 2022 until my surgery. It was challenging because I couldn't train or practice."
Raducanu, who has faced criticism for frequently changing her coaching team, has reunited with her childhood coach, Nick Cavaday, who is accompanying her in Australia.
"I'm setting things up the way I truly prefer. The people around me now bring a sense of tranquility," she shared. "It's wonderful to be with Nick. I've known him since I was a child, and I feel very comfortable with him."
"In all aspects of my life, I feel a sense of calm and stability. After an eight-month absence and three surgeries, I am truly grateful to be able to move freely."
