Empoli 0-5 Atalanta: La Dea bounce back from Champions League exit to thrash hosts

The visitors faced significant disappointment earlier in the week when they were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Club Brugge. However, this setback now allows them to focus on their pursuit of a first Serie A title.

From the outset against Empoli, Atalanta dominated the first half, effectively securing the match by halftime. Home goalkeeper Marco Silvestri was kept busy early on, managing to thwart attempts from David Zappacosta and Berat Djimsiti initially.

Djimsiti came close with an overhead kick that sailed just over the bar, shortly before Christian Kouamé tested Marco Carnesecchi with a powerful shot during one of Empoli's rare attacks.

Atalanta finally broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark in somewhat fortunate circumstances. Zappacosta's cross appeared harmless until it deflected off Emmanuel Gyasi, eluding Silvestri and finding the back of the net.

Soon after, the visitors doubled their lead when Mateo Retegui converted a flick-on from Djimsiti following a corner, and they further increased their advantage just minutes before the break.

Ademola Lookman, who had garnered attention for missing a penalty against Brugge despite not being the designated taker, showcased his talent by skillfully rounding Silvestri and slotting the ball into an empty net.

Within ten minutes of the second half, Atalanta extended their lead as Lookman struck again, firing a shot into the corner after receiving a pass from Marten de Roon.

At this stage, the only remaining question was the final score, and Atalanta added further polish to their performance with Zappacosta's precise low shot from the edge of the area.

Empoli could only seek a consolation goal, and they nearly achieved it through 16-year-old substitute Thomas Campaniello, who made his debut and became his team's second-youngest player in Serie A history. However, he was unable to keep his shot down during a one-on-one opportunity with Carnesecchi.

Overall, this match was a comfortable victory for Atalanta, who have now netted five goals in consecutive away matches in Serie A. This impressive form positions them favorably in the Scudetto race, while Empoli finds themselves entrenched in the relegation zone.

Although a victory was not anticipated for them in this match, their goal difference, which may significantly impact their efforts to avoid relegation, suffered a considerable setback.
