Erik ten Hag appointed Bayer Leverkusen Manager

Bayer Leverkusen have announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, ushering in a new chapter following Xabi Alonso’s celebrated tenure. The 56-year-old Dutchman signs a two-year contract, returning to the Bundesliga after nearly a decade, this time as manager of a club that has recently experienced both unprecedented success and looming transition.
Ten Hag succeeds Xabi Alonso, who led Leverkusen to a historic domestic double and an unbeaten 51-match run in the 2023/24 season before departing for Real Madrid. The Spaniard's transformative leadership elevated the club’s European standing and left behind big shoes to fill.
Ten Hag brings a wealth of experience to the BayArena. His managerial resume includes:
- Three Eredivisie titles
- Two KNVB Cups
- One Johan Cruyff Shield with Ajax
- A memorable UEFA Champions League semi-final run in 2018/19, where his youthful Ajax side captivated Europe
At Manchester United, he lifted the Carabao Cup (2023) and FA Cup (2024), though his stint ended in November 2024 after a disappointing start to his third season.
“With Erik ten Hag, we rely on an experienced coach with an impressive sporting track record,” said Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes. “He proved his class at Ajax and managed success under difficult conditions at Manchester United.”
Leverkusen’s New Era
Ten Hag now faces the challenge of maintaining Leverkusen’s momentum amidst an evolving squad. The club is expected to lose several key players this summer:
- Florian Wirtz is close to sealing a high-profile move to Liverpool
- Jeremie Frimpong is also tipped for an exit, with Premier League interest
- Captain Jonathan Tah will leave upon the expiration of his contract
“Bayer 04 is one of the best clubs in Germany and is also part of the European elite,” said Ten Hag during his unveiling. “I came to Leverkusen to confirm the ambitions that have grown over the past few years.”
Ten Hag described his new role as an “exciting task” and highlighted his desire to build and develop a competitive, ambitious team through this period of transition.
Ajax interest rebuffed
Ten Hag had reportedly been approached by Ajax following the departure of Francesco Farioli, but chose to pursue a new challenge instead. According to Ajax technical director Alex Kroes, Ten Hag was in talks with the Dutch club but ultimately opted for Leverkusen’s project.
With Leverkusen set to feature prominently in both Bundesliga and European competitions next season, Ten Hag will be under pressure to deliver results while reconstructing a squad that may be stripped of its biggest stars. His tactical acumen, particularly his structured, high-pressing system, could be crucial in navigating the challenges of this new era.
