Erik ten Hag set to replace Xabi Alonso as Bayer Leverkusen head coach

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has officially agreed to take over the reins at Bayer Leverkusen, replacing Xabi Alonso ahead of the 2025-26 Bundesliga season.

Ten Hag, who was dismissed by Manchester United in October following a disappointing start to the campaign, just four wins in 14 matches has swiftly returned to the spotlight. The Dutch tactician emerged as the leading candidate for the Leverkusen job after Alonso confirmed his departure earlier this month, reportedly en route to becoming Real Madrid's next manager.

Leverkusen entering a new era post-Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen finished the 2024/25 Bundesliga season in second place, a step back from their historic double-winning, unbeaten domestic campaign under Alonso just a year ago. With star players Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong reportedly set to join Liverpool, Ten Hag inherits a talented but transitioning squad in need of a fresh tactical direction and rebuilding.

Ten Hag brings Bundesliga experience and tactical pedigree

Ten Hag's return to German football marks a full-circle moment in his coaching career. He previously managed Bayern Munich’s reserve team between 2013 and 2015, gaining critical insight into German football development and culture. His coaching CV includes a highly successful spell at Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie titles and led the team to a Champions League semifinal in 2019. At Manchester United, he won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, despite a turbulent tenure.

Now, Leverkusen are banking on Ten Hag’s tactical acumen and rebuilding capabilities to guide the club through a pivotal transition period in both domestic and European competitions.
