Erling Haaland on target as Manchester City beat Villarreal 2–0 in Spain

Erling Haaland was on the scoresheet once again as Manchester City eased to a 2–0 win over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League at El Madrigal. The Norwegian striker opened the scoring in the 17th minute, turning in a low cross from Rico Lewis for his 15th goal of the season, before Bernardo Silva doubled City’s lead before half-time with a simple header from Savinho’s pinpoint delivery.
Despite sitting third in La Liga, Villarreal struggled to trouble City’s defence for most of the game. Nicolas Pépé and Thomas Partey, both formerly of Arsenal, came closest to scoring for the hosts, Partey even hitting the post late on, but it was a comfortable night for Pep Guardiola’s men.
The result puts City on seven points after three games in the league phase, while Villarreal remain on just one, having also fallen to Tottenham on Matchday 1.
Haaland’s Inevitable Goal
It took just 17 minutes for the breakthrough everyone expected. Matheus Nunes threaded a clever pass to Lewis, who squared the ball across goal for Haaland to sweep home with his right foot — clinical as ever.
Villarreal briefly threatened through Pape Gueye, who saw a shot from the edge of the area drift wide, but City quickly reasserted control.
Ten minutes before half-time, they doubled their advantage. Savinho’s curling cross was met by Silva, completely unmarked in the box, who nodded in from close range to make it 2–0.
City in Cruise Control
After the break, City slowed the tempo, content to manage the game with ease. The first shot of the second half didn’t arrive until the 61st minute, underlining their control.
In the 71st minute, Pépé had a golden chance to pull one back with a free header, but sent it wide. Moments later, Mateo Kovacic lofted a ball over the top for Haaland, but his effort was denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Júnior.
Partey’s header off the post in the closing moments summed up Villarreal’s night - close, but never convincing. City’s defence remained largely untested as they made it three wins in a row in all competitions.
