Eva Lys eyes huge Australian Open clash with Iga Swiatek after lucky loser opportunity

Eva Lys, who was initially set to leave Melbourne after a third-round qualifying loss, is now preparing for a fourth-round showdown with world number two Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open. Thanks to Anna Kalinskaya's last-minute withdrawal, the 23-year-old German has turned a “lucky loser” spot into a chance of a lifetime, securing a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian on Saturday.

"Obviously I'm very, very happy to be making it to the second week. I feel like the second week was always such a dream for me," Lys said after her victory.

The Kyiv-born player, who previously faced Swiatek in Stuttgart three years ago and lost, now relishes the opportunity to face the Polish star on one of tennis’ biggest stages, even as it all feels surreal.

"I don't know when the realisation will kick in," Lys admitted. "It's definitely an amazing situation to be in, especially knowing that I was a lucky loser."

Reflecting on her whirlwind journey to the main draw, Lys shared a moment of disbelief: "I think I found a picture of me sleeping the day I got in. I was just trying to spend time at the venue, trying to do something because I didn't really know what to do with my time. I was just preparing for my flight the next day."

Lys continued, "It's an insane story, how fast it happened. It's been a couple of days. Those days have totally changed my life. So I'm definitely really thankful."

The unexpected opportunity has forced Lys to alter her travel plans. Originally booked to leave Australia on Sunday, she now intends to stay for her clash with Swiatek and will adjust her flight accordingly.

"Right now I think after the press conference we're going to go and try to change it a little bit further," Lys said with a laugh. "It's actually really funny. We just picked a date. We're like, 'Okay, Sunday’s six days away. We’re just going to pick Sunday.' I’m glad we have to change it now."

As Lys prepares to face one of the tournament's top seeds, the German's Australian Open journey is already one for the history books.
