Evan Rodrigues and Panthers surge late to down Oilers in Game 2

The Florida Panthers have reached the halfway mark in their pursuit of winning the Stanley Cup Final with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night in Sunrise, Fla.

As they strive for their first-ever franchise championship, the Panthers currently hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, having secured victories in both of their home games.

However, the team remains cautious and fully aware of the potential pitfalls of looking too far ahead as they prepare for Game 3 in Edmonton on Thursday.

Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad emphasized their unwavering approach, stating, "We maintain our game regardless of the circumstances. Whether we're up 2-1 or down 2-1 in a game, it doesn't affect us. We're not going into their arena with a 2-0 lead; we're going there to play a hockey game."

The Panthers now have history on their side, as 49 out of the 54 previous teams that won the first two games of the finals went on to claim the Stanley Cup.

In the latest victory, Evan Rodrigues scored two goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie, while Niko Mikkola and Ekblad contributed with individual goals. The Panthers responded emphatically with four unanswered goals after falling behind in the first period. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 18 saves to secure the win.

However, the triumph came at a cost, as Florida captain Aleksander Barkov was forced to leave the game after receiving a forearm to the jaw from Leon Draisaitl in the middle of the third period. Barkov did not return to the ice.

Draisaitl defended the hit, stating, "I don't believe it was out of frustration. It was simply a hit. I don't think there was anything malicious about it. Perhaps it was a bit high, but certainly not with the intention to cause injury or anything of that nature."

Panthers coach Paul Maurice, who maintained a stern demeanor during his media availability, did not provide an update on Barkov's condition. Draisaitl received a minor penalty for the hit, but Maurice declined to publicly express his opinion on whether it was the correct call.

Edmonton's offensive struggles have been evident in the first two games, with their star players failing to find the back of the net. However, coach Kris Knoblauch remains calm and believes that his team shouldn't panic.

Knoblauch acknowledges that the Oilers have had good scoring opportunities and believes that if a few shots that hit the goalpost had gone in, the narrative would be different. He remains optimistic about the team's power play potential.

With limited time to turn the series around, the Oilers need to capitalize on their chances and convert them into goals. Forward Zach Hyman emphasizes the importance of taking care of business at home and winning both games.

Despite the odds being against them, the Oilers have shown resilience throughout the season, especially after a slow start. Captain Connor McDavid expresses excitement about the opportunity for the team to come together and overcome adversity. He welcomes the challenge and believes that the team performs best when their backs are against the wall.

In addition to their offensive struggles, the Oilers also have an injury concern with defenseman Darnell Nurse. Nurse was limited to only a few shifts after appearing to be injured during a check in the first period.
