Everton 0-0 Newcastle: Points shared at Goodison Park as Gordon miss from the spot

The result means Everton has now accumulated 19 home points since early April, the highest in the Premier League during that span.
After securing their first league win of the season against Crystal Palace, Everton started brightly in the first ten minutes. However, they were fortunate to avoid going behind when Iliman Ndiaye deflected a goal-bound effort from Bruno Guimarães away from danger.
At the other end, the Toffees had a goal disallowed as Abdoulaye Doucouré was ruled narrowly offside before heading in a deep cross from James Garner. The Magpies capitalized on this reprieve, and a lengthy VAR review led to a penalty being awarded for a reckless challenge by James Tarkowski on Sandro Tonali.
As Gordon stepped up to take the penalty, the Gwladys Street End erupted in anticipation, but their celebrations were short-lived when Jordan Pickford made a crucial save, denying Gordon his first goal since returning to Newcastle.
Despite both teams having opportunities, it was surprising to see the score remain deadlocked as the match approached the hour mark, especially given that seven of the last eight encounters involving either side had featured over 2.5 goals. Newcastle seemed more assertive, with Gordon providing a lively presence but lacking the final touch.

As the game progressed, Everton created a significant chance through Dwight McNeil, whose pass found Dominic Calvert-Lewin, forcing a low save from Nick Pope. In the ensuing scramble, Idrissa Gueye sent the follow-up effort over the bar.
The match opened up, but neither side could find the quality needed to claim all three points, leaving both Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe to settle for a point apiece.
Everton’s performance has improved after a rocky start, earning five points from their last three matches despite sitting 16th in the league standings. Meanwhile, Newcastle has only one win from five away matches this season, raising some concerns, but they remain sixth in the table with just one league defeat to their name thus far.
