Everton 3-2 Tottenham: Toffees sink Spurs with blistering first half, end winless run

Everton delivered a dominant first-half performance to clinch a thrilling 3-2 victory over a lackluster Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on Sunday. The win marked David Moyes' first success since returning to manage the club for a second spell, while Spurs' struggles continued in what has been a dismal campaign.

Everton Start Strong with Early Goals

Desperate for a turnaround after just one win in their previous 12 league outings, Everton seized control from the start. Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke the deadlock in the 13th minute with a clinical strike, ending his 16-match goal drought that stretched back to September.

The Toffees doubled their lead by the 30th minute when Iliman Ndiaye showcased brilliant skill to outwit Spurs defender Radu Dragusin before finding the net. This attacking momentum was capped off in first-half stoppage time when young Archie Gray accidentally turned James Tarkowski’s header into his own goal, leaving Spurs shell-shocked at the break.

Remarkably, Everton scored as many goals in the first half as they had in their previous seven matches combined.

Tottenham Fight Back but Fall Short

Spurs showed signs of life in the second half, dominating possession and creating opportunities. Dejan Kulusevski pulled one back with a precise lofted finish, while Richarlison, playing against his former club, slotted home in stoppage time to narrow the gap.

However, Everton’s resilient defense held firm, securing a crucial victory that lifted them to 16th in the Premier League standings, four points above the relegation zone. Tottenham, sitting one place higher in 15th, remain just four points ahead of the Toffees and dangerously close to the bottom three.

Player and Manager Reactions

A jubilant Calvert-Lewin expressed his relief after the match:
"I'm delighted with how we went today. We needed a win for the lads and the club. Everything clicked today. You go through periods where you're not hitting the back of the net or getting the rub of the green. We were defensively solid and built from that."

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou lamented his team's poor start:
"It is a difficult result. We struggled to really get in the game in the first half, and that gave Everton momentum. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. The players tried to claw the game back, but we just fell short. We couldn’t really take control of the game."

Troubling Signs for Spurs

The defeat marked Tottenham’s 12th Premier League loss this season, making it only the sixth time in their history they’ve suffered as many defeats in their opening 22 league matches. Despite their strong historical record at Goodison Park, Spurs failed to capitalize on the fixture, extending their winless streak in an increasingly worrisome season.

Everton’s Revival?

For Everton, the victory provides a glimmer of hope in their battle against relegation. Under Moyes, the team displayed renewed energy, with Calvert-Lewin and Ndiaye spearheading the attack. With momentum on their side, the Toffees will look to build on this performance as they fight to maintain their Premier League status.
