Ex-Leicester, Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater announces retirement

Danny Drinkwater, the former Leicester and Chelsea midfielder, announced his retirement at the age of 33, citing a prolonged period of feeling stuck in uncertainty. Known for his contribution to Leicester's remarkable Premier League victory in 2016, Drinkwater struggled to find his place after moving to Chelsea a year later.
His tenure at Stamford Bridge didn't unfold as expected, leading to unsuccessful loan stints at Burnley and Aston Villa, alongside off-field issues. Drinkwater faced legal trouble due to a drink-driving incident, sustained an ankle injury outside a nightclub, and was involved in a training ground altercation with a Villa teammate, Jota, in 2020.
After his last spell at Reading during the 2021/22 season, Drinkwater remained clubless following the expiration of his Chelsea contract. Reflecting on The High Performance Podcast, he expressed his decision to retire, acknowledging the prolonged period of feeling undervalued and unable to play at the level he desired.
Although he cherished his football career, Drinkwater admitted the difficulty of letting go of something that had been his life since childhood, emphasizing that it would have been harder if he were compelled to retire due to injury or age while actively playing.
As a Manchester United academy graduate, Drinkwater transitioned to Leicester in 2012, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
