FA Cup to introduce semi-automated offside technology in historic first

Semi-automated offside technology is set to be utilized in English football for the first time during seven FA Cup fifth-round matches held in Premier League stadiums next month, as announced by the FA on Thursday.

Among the eight fifth-round fixtures, the match between Preston North End and Burnley is the sole encounter that does not feature a Premier League team.

The introduction of semi-automated offside technology was anticipated to occur prior to Christmas; however, it encountered issues during the testing phase.

"The new technology will be introduced in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round... following an extensive testing period that has taken place during the 2024-25 season," the FA said in a statement.

"Following successful live operation in the Emirates FA Cup, the Premier League will look to implement the system later this season.

"Semi-Automated Offside Technology will provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters."

Video Assistant Referees will be present in all eight matches of the FA Cup fifth round, accompanied by VAR announcements in which referees will clarify their final decisions for both fans and viewers.

VAR was not utilized in the earlier rounds.

In the fourth round, Manchester United secured a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, with Harry Maguire scoring a late winner, despite appearing to be offside, as the linesman did not signal.

The matches for the FA Cup fifth round are scheduled for the weekend of March 1 and will feature four matchups between Premier League teams.
