Falcons name Michael Penix Jr. as starting quarterback over Kirk Cousins

The Atlanta Falcons issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that Michael Penix Jr. (24) will serve as the starting quarterback for the upcoming match against the New York Giants.
Kirk Cousins (36) will assume the role of backup quarterback at the beginning of a game for the first time this season, following his substantial four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons earlier this year. The experienced quarterback has struggled in the last five games, recording nine interceptions against only one touchdown.
"After careful consideration, we have decided that Michael Penix Jr. will be the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons moving forward," stated head coach Raheem Morris in the official announcement. "This decision is based purely on football performance, and our primary focus is on preparing the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants."
Penix Jr. has appeared in relief during two losses this season, where the team was unable to mount a comeback. In the October defeat to Seattle, he completed his only pass attempt for 14 yards, while in the November loss to the Denver Broncos, he successfully completed two of four passes for 24 yards.
This decision comes at a pivotal moment for a Falcons team with a 7-7 record, positioned in the midst of the NFC South divisional competition. Atlanta secured a 15-9 victory on Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders, but Cousins' continued underperformance was a significant factor in the team's decision.
"We did not perform particularly well at the quarterback position," remarked Morris. "Our play in that area on Monday was lacking. I believe in being open and honest about these matters. There will always be uncertainties regarding the head coach and the quarterback position.
It is essential to be transparent about this. We must improve our performance. That is the key message that needs to be communicated; we must enhance our play to secure victories against our next opponent, the New York Giants."
Penix Jr. secured the Heisman Trophy last season while representing Washington and was subsequently chosen eighth overall by the Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft. The rookie quarterback is now poised to make his inaugural official start, with Morris fully in his past.
"There is no conceivable downside to entrusting the position to someone in whom you have invested significantly, someone you have brought into the organization, and someone who has consistently expressed the right sentiments since their arrival," stated Morris in reference to Penix Jr.
The NFL has already scheduled the Falcons-Commanders matchup in two weeks for a Sunday Night primetime event, a contest that could influence a variety of outcomes for both teams.
