Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan announces retirement after 15 seasons in NFL

Matt Ryan, the former quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts, who was named the NFL Most Valuable Player in 2016, officially declared his retirement on Monday.
In a video shared by the Falcons on social media, Ryan expressed his gratitude for his 16-year NFL journey, describing it as "a remarkable experience."
"I am proud to conclude my career as a member of the Falcons," stated Ryan, who was selected as the third overall pick by Atlanta in 2008 and remained with the team until the 2021 season.
"In this profession, you have no control over where you begin. I consider myself incredibly fortunate that both my start and my end were here in Atlanta," he added.
Although Ryan did not play last season, he signed a one-day contract with the Falcons to retire alongside the team.
"I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the Falcons fans for their unwavering support," he expressed. "Throughout the ups and downs, I always felt your enthusiasm and dedication. I want you to know that every day, I felt a sense of responsibility to give you the best version of myself."
He concludes his career as the most successful quarterback in Falcons history. He led the team to the NFL playoffs six times and is one of just two quarterbacks, alongside Chris Chandler in 1998, to guide the Falcons to the Super Bowl.
In 2016, he was awarded the NFL MVP title, but during that season's Super Bowl, the Falcons squandered a 28-3 lead and lost to the New England Patriots.
Reflecting on that loss, Ryan confessed on Monday, "It stings. I believe that's something that will always linger within you. Falling short of your ultimate goal. But that's the way life goes."
After being traded to the Colts in 2022 and playing a single season there, he remained hopeful of joining another team following his release.
Ryan wraps up his career with 62,792 passing yards, 381 touchdowns, and 183 interceptions over 15 seasons.
