FC Midtjylland 1-2 Real Sociedad: La Real take slender first-leg lead in Europa League play-off tie

Real Sociedad achieved a notable European knockout victory, marking their first success in 14 significant matches since defeating Atletico Madrid in November 1998.

They triumphed over FC Midtjylland with a score of 2-1 at the MCH Arena, bringing them closer to the UEFA Europa League (UEL) Round of 16 in their inaugural matchup against the Danish team.

The home side started strongly, nearly taking the lead when Denil Castillo’s header from a well-placed free kick struck the left post, narrowly avoiding an early setback for Sociedad.

However, the visitors quickly established dominance, with Brais Mendez winning a penalty following a careless foul by Oliver Sorensen, which he confidently converted into the bottom left corner.

Despite this, the Wolves remained undeterred and sought an immediate equalizer, but Unai Marrero made two exceptional saves to thwart attempts from Dario Osorio and Aral Simsir.

As Midtjylland began to find their rhythm, La Real swiftly extended their lead when Takefusa Kubo delivered a powerful shot into the top corner, curling in from the right side in a manner reminiscent of Robben.

Before the halftime whistle, Midtjylland reduced the deficit when Adam Buksa finished off a well-executed team play with a close-range tap-in at the near post, setting the stage for an exciting second half.

Following the break, the visitors ramped up their offensive efforts, with Orri Oskarsson, Martín Zubimendi, and Pablo Marin all posing threats before the hour mark. Despite having a month and a half of domestic respite to concentrate on the UEL, Thomas Thomasberg’s squad faced a significant challenge in overcoming a steadfast La Real defense.

In a tense moment, Midtjylland nearly conceded a third goal when substitute Mikel Oyarzabal forced a crucial goal-line clearance with just 14 minutes remaining.

The Wolves were unable to secure a second goal, setting the stage for an important match next week at the Reale Arena in San Sebastián. This loss represents their first of the new year and their third in the UEFA Europa League, with their previous defeat occurring against FC Porto in mid-December.

On the other hand, Real Sociedad achieved only their second victory in the last six competitive away matches, maintaining their aspirations of advancing further in this season's European second-tier tournament.
