FC Steaua Bucuresti 1-3 Olympique Lyonnais: Fofana brace fires Lyon to first leg victory in Bucharest

Olympique Lyonnais secured a 3-1 victory over FCSB in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 matchup in Bucharest, marking the first game following manager Paulo Fonseca's nine-month suspension due to inappropriate conduct towards a referee the previous weekend.
The match began with Lyon appearing unsettled, as Moussa Niakhate surrendered possession to David Miculescu near his own penalty area. The FCSB forward managed to evade goalkeeper Lucas Perri but ultimately sent his shot wide from a challenging angle.
Perri soon showcased his skills, first by deflecting Malcom Edjouma’s header over the bar, and then executing a remarkable save from close range as Siyabonga Nguezana attempted a diving header.
Following these early scares, Lyon began to assert their dominance in the first half. Georges Mikautadze's attempt was deflected wide, and from the subsequent corner, his flick at the near post forced a reaction save from Stefan Tarnovanu.
Undeterred, Mikautadze delivered an exquisite looping cross that led to the opening goal at the half-hour mark, with Nicolas Tagliafico's downward header at the back post eluding the sliding Nguezana.
Although FCSB applied some early pressure, it was Lyon who appeared more poised to extend their lead in the second half.
Mikautadze remained a persistent threat, and his left-footed shot was destined for the top corner until Tarnovanu intervened with a glove save.
Against the run of play, the hosts managed to equalize when Risto Radunovic delivered a cross to the back post for substitute Alexandru Baluta, who skillfully controlled the ball before striking it into the net.
However, Lyon responded decisively, as their substitute Malick Fofana scored his fifth goal in European competition this season, expertly placing the ball into the bottom corner after it fortuitously came to him in the penalty area with just five minutes remaining.
In a tumultuous conclusion to the match, FCSB came perilously close to leveling the score once more, with Joyskim Dawa’s header from a corner narrowly denied by the crossbar and expertly saved by Perri.
The goalkeeper promptly sent the ball downfield, allowing Fofana to break free towards the goal.
The young forward composedly placed the ball past Tarnovanu, extending Lyon's lead to two goals before the second leg, while simultaneously preserving their unbeaten head-to-head record against FCSB (4 wins, 1 draw).
