Federer pens heartfelt letter to Nadal as the Spaniard nears retirement

Roger Federer (43) honored his retiring rival, Rafa Nadal (38), on Tuesday, expressing that Nadal challenged him in ways no other player could and that he has brought immense pride to the tennis world throughout his illustrious career spanning over two decades.

Nadal is set to compete with the Spanish team in their Davis Cup match against the Netherlands later on Tuesday, as the 22-time Grand Slam champion, who has faced numerous injuries, prepares to conclude his career following the team competition in Malaga.

Federer, a member of the "Big Three" in men's tennis alongside Nadal and Novak Djokovic, shared a letter on X reflecting on his rivalry with Nadal.

"Let us begin with the obvious: you defeated me—often. More than I was able to defeat you. You challenged me in ways that no one else could," Federer remarked, noting that Nadal leads their rivalry 24-16.

"On clay, it felt as though I was entering your domain, and you compelled me to exert more effort than I ever imagined possible just to maintain my position."

"You prompted me to rethink my game—so much so that I altered the size of my racket head in search of any advantage."

Federer, who secured 20 Grand Slam titles before his retirement in 2022, also humorously acknowledged Nadal's unique on-court habits.

"I am not particularly superstitious, but you took it to an entirely different level," Federer continued.

"All those rituals. Arranging your water bottles like toy soldiers, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear—all executed with the utmost intensity."

"Secretly, I found great enjoyment in the entire spectacle. It was so distinctive—it was quintessentially you. And you know what, Rafa? You enhanced my enjoyment of the game."

Nadal stood by Federer's side during the Swiss legend's final event, where they played doubles for Team Europe at the Laver Cup in 2022, with images of the two sharing an emotional moment going viral on social media.

"It meant the world to me that you were there alongside me—not merely as my rival but as my doubles partner," Federer expressed.

"Sharing the court with you that evening and those tears will always remain one of the most cherished moments of my career."
