Fenerbahce 1-3 Rangers: Cerny double sees Rangers earn famous win in Round of 16 first leg

Fenerbahce experienced a historic defeat against a Scottish team for the first time, as Rangers delivered a decisive performance, winning 3-1 at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
This victory places Rangers in a favorable position in their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 matchup.
Given the differing domestic performances of the two teams, Rangers recognized the necessity of a strong start to disrupt their high-flying opponents. Interim manager Barry Ferguson's tactical shift to a three-at-the-back formation effectively achieved this goal.
Just six minutes into the match, Cyriel Dessers took advantage of defensive lapses to maneuver around goalkeeper Irfan Can Egribayat, with his shot barely crossing the goal line before Caglar Soyuncu could intervene, granting the visitors an unexpected early advantage.
In response to this initial setback, the home side attempted to rally, with Youssef En-Nesyri and Edin Dzeko both coming close to scoring. Substitute Alexander Djiku then demonstrated his striking instincts by deftly redirecting a flicked ball from a corner into the net, surpassing Jack Butland.
Despite facing a challenging period, Rangers managed to regain their lead just before halftime. After reclaiming possession in midfield, they launched an attack, with Vaclav Cerny setting up Dessers in the box. Dessers then passed the ball back to Cerny, who calmly slotted it past Egribayat, once again surprising the home crowd.
While the 'Gers anticipated a vigorous second-half response from Sari Kanaryalar, they could have extended their lead were it not for some misfortune that befell Dessers.
The striker believed he had scored his second goal just six minutes after the break, following up on a saved shot from Nicolas Raskin, only for VAR to rule the goal out due to an offside infraction.
Just six minutes later, the forward managed to beat Egribayat at his near post with a well-placed shot; however, the situation felt familiar for the Belgian as the VAR once again ruled him offside.
As both teams began to show signs of fatigue, the match transformed into a series of exhilarating counter-attacks.
After missing several chances to equalize, the home team faced consequences with just ten minutes left when Cerny surged forward and calmly finished past Egribayat, securing a remarkable away victory.
Rangers have now suffered only one defeat in their last eight Europa League away matches and are strong favorites to advance to the quarter-finals when the second leg takes place at Ibrox next week.
