FIFA chief Gianni Infantino says Turkish league violence unacceptable

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his disapproval of the violence witnessed in the Turkish Super Lig, deeming it as "unacceptable." In light of the brawl that occurred after Fenerbahce's 3-2 victory against Trabzonspor, he urged the authorities to promptly address the issue and take appropriate measures.

Trabzonspor fans rushed onto the field after the game ended on Sunday and attacked Fenerbahce players, who defended themselves.

This incident adds to a series of violent events in the Turkish league this season, such as a club president attacking a referee and protests against refereeing decisions.

Turkish police arrested 12 fans following the incident, as stated by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Monday.

Fenerbahce players departed Trabzon on a private plane on Sunday night, under tight security measures.

FIFA President Infantino condemned the violence, emphasizing that safety is paramount for players to enjoy the game.

He urged authorities to ensure accountability for those responsible for the disturbing events in Trabzon.

Trabzonspor coach Abdullah Avci expressed his concern about the current state of Turkish football, emphasizing the prevailing chaos and constant high tensions. Avci lamented the inability to harness the healing power of football in such circumstances.

Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal, on the other hand, questioned the reasons behind the tense atmosphere, highlighting the importance of celebrating and overcoming these challenges. Kartal emphasized the need for tolerance and common sense among individuals.

The Turkish Football Federation issued a statement, assuring that they are actively engaging with representatives and state authorities to address the incidents that occurred during and after the match.

They are committed to conducting thorough investigations and imposing appropriate penalties on those responsible for the violence, in order to prevent any future recurrence of such events.
