FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Botafogo survive late Seattle pressure to win 2-1 in Club World Cup debut

Brazilian giants Botafogo marked their FIFA Club World Cup debut with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field on Sunday. Goals from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus secured all three points for the 2024 Copa Libertadores champions, despite a spirited second-half fightback by the MLS side.
In a game that showcased South American flair against North American resilience, Botafogo’s early dominance gave way to late drama, with Cristian Roldan’s deflected goal setting up a tense finale in front of a passionate Seattle crowd.
First-Half headers set the tone
Botafogo wasted no time asserting their authority in the Group B clash, controlling possession and forcing Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei into action early. Frei made a string of saves to deny Igor Jesus and Alex Telles, but the breakthrough came in the 27th minute.
A foul by Nouhou on Artur just outside the area gave Alex Telles the chance to whip in a dangerous free-kick. Rising highest was 20-year-old Jair Cunha, who nodded in a powerful header to give the visitors a deserved 1–0 lead.

The Brazilian champions doubled their advantage just before halftime. Vitinho delivered a looping cross from the right, and Igor Jesus leapt above the Seattle defense to guide a textbook header into the far corner.
Seattle fight back but fall just short
Seattle Sounders, playing in front of their home fans in this historic Club World Cup appearance, came out with renewed energy in the second half. A golden chance to reduce the deficit fell to Ryan Kent in the 55th minute, but the English winger failed to convert from close range.
The hosts eventually got back into the match in the 75th minute. Cristian Roldan’s header took a wicked deflection off Igor Jesus, completely wrongfooting Botafogo keeper John, and brought the scoreline to 2–1.
The goal electrified Lumen Field, and Seattle pushed hard for an equaliser, pinning Botafogo back for the remainder of the game. A last-gasp reflex save by John in stoppage time proved to be the defining moment as Botafogo clung to their narrow lead.
Botafogo captain Marlon Freitas admitted post-match that the performance was below par:
“The important thing here was the result and the effort, but we know we didn’t play well. This win helps ease some of the anxiety, but we must improve against our next opponents because playing like this, the result might not be the same,” he told TV Globo.
The victory puts Botafogo second in Group B, trailing Paris Saint-Germain only on goal difference after PSG’s emphatic 4–0 win over Atlético Madrid earlier in the day.
For Seattle, it was a valiant effort that fell just short. Their attacking intent in the second half was commendable, but early defensive lapses cost them dearly.
