FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Fluminense impress but held to goalless draw by Dortmund in Group F opener

Brazilian flair met German grit in a compelling goalless stalemate as Fluminense FC and Borussia Dortmund kicked off their Group F campaign at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. While the scoreboard at MetLife Stadium remained unchanged, the match delivered energy, technical quality, and moments of drama—most of which came from the South American side.

Fluminense shine, but lack final touch

Led by the attacking trio of Jhon Arias, Agustin Canobbio, and Everaldo, Fluminense carved out the better chances, dominating possession and tempo in a first half where long-range efforts were their primary weapon. Strikes from Arias, Martinelli, and Hércules tested Dortmund’s resilience without breaking through.

The Brazilians’ golden moment came in the 58th minute when Everaldo burst clear, only to unselfishly square for Canobbio, whose shot was easily saved by Gregor Kobel, a moment Flu may come to rue in a tight group.

Another flurry of activity saw Kobel save a deflected effort from Everaldo and deny Nonato on the rebound, though the latter was later judged offside. The goalkeeper was Dortmund’s standout performer, keeping them in the match as waves of Flu attacks poured in.

Dortmund grind out a point

For Borussia Dortmund, it was a performance of survival and patience. Coach Niko Kovac admitted post-match that his side were second best for much of the game:

“Fluminense is a top team. We weren’t as aggressive as I expected in the first half... it was a lucky point for us.”

Still, there were positives. Karim Adeyemi’s pace down the left nearly led to an opener for Serhou Guirassy, who narrowly missed a tap-in. Jobe Bellingham, making his Dortmund debut, showed promise with calm distribution and poise after coming off the bench.

Dortmund finished the stronger of the two sides but couldn’t find the breakthrough, and Group F remains wide open after the opening encounter.

Post-Match Reactions

Thiago Silva, Fluminense veteran defender: “I think I played well. The team did as well. Their back five is not easy to penetrate... now we need to recover well for the next game.”

Renato Portaluppi, Fluminense coach: “The team played a great game and deserved to win because of the chances we created... from tomorrow, we’ll start thinking about our next opponent.”

Niko Kovac, Dortmund manager: “A draw against a Brazilian team is always a good start. Now we have to win the next games.”

What’s Next?

  • Fluminense FC will now prepare for their next Group F match, knowing a win could all but secure a knockout spot.
  • Borussia Dortmund must improve their attacking output if they hope to top the group.

Group F's next matches will be crucial, especially with Asian and African champions waiting in the wings.
