FIFA confirms DR Congo for World Cup Play-offs, ending Nigeria’s Qualification hopes

Nigeria’s hopes of salvaging a route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup have officially ended after FIFA confirmed the final lineup for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, with the DR Congo national football team representing Africa in the decisive competition.

The announcement settles a dispute that had lingered since the African play-off stage in late 2025, where the Nigeria national football team lost to DR Congo after a tense tie that finished 1-1 before being decided on penalties.

FIFA Confirms six Nations for Final World Cup Spots

FIFA revealed that six countries will compete in the inter-confederation play-off tournament, where only two teams will secure the final places at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

The confirmed participants are:

  • Bolivia
  • DR Congo
  • Iraq
  • Jamaica
  • New Caledonia
  • Suriname

The tournament is scheduled to begin on March 26, with the winners advancing to the global finals. The inter-continental play-offs are designed to give teams from different regions one last opportunity to qualify for the tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nigeria’s Protest Rejected

Nigeria’s elimination from the qualification race was not without controversy. Following their penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the CAF play-off match, the Nigeria Football Federation filed a formal complaint to FIFA, claiming that DR Congo had fielded ineligible players during the decisive encounter.

The NFF requested that the result be overturned and that Nigeria be awarded the slot in the play-off tournament. However, FIFA’s latest confirmation of the six participating nations effectively dismisses the appeal and closes the case.

With DR Congo officially listed among the competing teams, there is no pathway left for Nigeria to enter the tournament.

A Bitter End to Nigeria’s World Cup Ambitions

For Nigeria, missing out on the play-off tournament marks another setback in the country’s pursuit of returning to the World Cup. The Super Eagles have historically been one of Africa’s most prominent teams on the global stage, having featured in multiple editions of the tournament. However, the narrow defeat to DR Congo and the unsuccessful appeal have now shut the door on their chances of reaching the 2026 competition.

The outcome also highlights the unforgiving nature of the qualification process, where even a single tie decided by penalties can determine whether a nation remains in contention or sees its campaign end abruptly.

Road to the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 edition will be the largest World Cup in history, expanding from 32 to 48 teams and featuring 104 matches across North America. Sixteen cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host matches during the tournament, which is expected to attract record global audiences.

With the inter-confederation play-offs now confirmed, the final two places at the tournament will soon be decided, completing the lineup for the most expansive World Cup ever staged.

For Nigeria, attention will now shift to rebuilding and preparing for future international competitions after a qualification campaign that ended in disappointment.
