FIFA may face legal action from players' union and leagues over packed schedule

According to a recent report by the BBC, FIFA, the world football governing body, is facing pressure from the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO) and the World Leagues Association (WLA) to reconsider its plans for a 32-team Club World Cup. The two organizations have warned FIFA that they may take legal action if the plans are not reviewed.

The concerns raised by FIFPRO and WLA stem from the expansion of European club competitions to 36 teams starting next season, as well as the proposed hosting of a 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the United States from June 15 to July 13 next year.

In a letter addressed to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, FIFPRO and WLA expressed their worry about the overcrowding of the football calendar and the impact it has on national leagues and players' well-being. They argue that the current schedule puts excessive strain on players and increases the risk of injuries.

FIFA has yet to respond to the concerns raised in the letter, and FIFPRO and WLA have not provided further details regarding their specific issues. However, both organizations are planning to bring up the matter at FIFA's ruling council meeting on May 17 in Bangkok, Thailand.

If FIFA fails to address their concerns, FIFPRO and WLA have stated that they will explore legal options against the governing body. The letter emphasizes the need for FIFA to take action and prioritize the well-being of players and the integrity of national leagues.
