FIFA World Rankings: Argentina Reclaims Top Spot, US Holds at 16th, Canada Reaches Record High, Mexico Climbs

The latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, released on April 3, 2025, have brought a reshuffling among the world's footballing elite. World champions Argentina reclaimed the No. 1 spot, surpassing Brazil after a six-year gap, while Nigeria made slight progress, moving up to 43rd place globally.

Argentina Back on Top, Spain Surges

Following their dominant international performances, Argentina solidified their position at the summit. Lionel Scaloni’s squad, who secured World Cup glory in Qatar, returned to No. 1 after convincing victories over Panama (2-0) and Curacao (7-0). Spain climbed one place to second, leapfrogging France after an impressive 4-0 triumph over the Netherlands and a hard-fought 1-0 win against Ireland in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. Meanwhile, Brazil dropped to third after a 2-1 defeat to Morocco in a friendly.

The new FIFA rankings saw minimal changes in the rest of the top 10, with Belgium holding steady at fourth, England at fifth, followed by the Netherlands, Croatia, and Italy. Portugal and Spain round out the elite rankings, while Germany remains just outside at 11th.

USA Struggles While Mexico Rises

The US men's national team (USMNT) remains 16th in the global rankings after suffering back-to-back losses in the Concacaf Nations League at SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California. Gregg Berhalter’s squad fell to Panama in the semifinals before losing to Canada in the third-place match.

Meanwhile, Mexico capitalized on its strong tournament performance, defeating both Canada and Panama to secure its first Nations League title. As a result, El Tri moved up two spots to 17th, closing the gap on their North American rivals.

Panama’s impressive upset against the U.S. earned them a three-spot rise, landing at No. 33.

Canada Continues Meteoric Rise

Canada's men’s national team has climbed to 30th place, marking a historic milestone. This continues their remarkable ascent from a lowly 122nd in October 2014. Under American coach Jesse Marsch, the team has made significant strides, including a historic 2022 World Cup qualification.

With the USA, Canada, and Mexico automatically qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as co-hosts, all three nations will next be in action at the Concacaf Gold Cup starting June 14.
