Fiorentina 0-3 Napoli: McTominay and Lukaku on target as Partenopei defeat La Viola to go top

Napoli ascended to the top of the Serie A standings following a commanding 3-0 victory against Fiorentina, who are now experiencing a downward spiral with four consecutive league matches without a win. The match commenced cautiously, as both teams had demonstrated considerable potential earlier in the season. However, the prospect of claiming the top position in Serie A spurred Napoli to dominate the early exchanges.
The Partenopei were denied an opening goal when Mathias Olivera was ruled offside after scoring in the 15th minute. Fiorentina's goalkeeper, David de Gea, was in excellent form, successfully parrying a shot from Leonardo Spinazzola. Napoli maintained their offensive pressure, which ultimately proved overwhelming for the Viola. David Neres skillfully evaded Fabiano Parisi to penetrate the box, delivering a powerful shot that found the net at De Gea’s near post.
Despite Napoli's unbeaten record this season when scoring first, Fiorentina sought to respond immediately. They enjoyed a period of dominance that included a disallowed goal from Moise Kean, which incensed manager Raffaele Palladino, as the handball was arguably influenced by contact with Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
Fiorentina continued to press, with attempts from Rolando Mandragora and Dodo, but they found themselves trailing at halftime for the first time in Serie A since their encounter with Lazio in September, a match they ultimately won. However, a repeat of that victory seemed unlikely when debutant Matías Moreno fouled Frank Anguissa in the penalty area, allowing Romelu Lukaku to convert the penalty and extend Napoli’s lead shortly after the interval.

Teams managed by Antonio Conte are typically resilient defensively, yet Fiorentina came close to scoring during a remarkable sequence that featured a stunning save from Alex Meret, along with crucial blocks from Amir Rrahmani and Olivera.
Fiorentina appeared thoroughly disheartened following that moment, allowing Napoli to navigate the final 20 minutes of the match with relative comfort. With Atalanta and Inter Milan currently in Riyadh for the Supercoppa Italiana, Napoli ascends to the top of the standings, albeit having played at least one more match than their two closest competitors for the title.
On the other hand, Fiorentina faces the risk of falling out of the top six entirely, having previously reached as high as third place in November. They will aim to break their longest winless streak since September 2022 in their upcoming match against Monza, who currently sit at the bottom of the table.
