Fiorentina 3-1 Panathinaikos (5-4 agg): Fiorentina defeat Panathinaikos to book Conference League quarter-final spot

Fiorentina successfully overcame a first-leg deficit to secure their advancement to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference League, defeating Panathinaikos 3-1 at Stadio Artemio Franchi and winning 5-4 on aggregate. This victory extended their unbeaten streak at home in European competitions to 12 matches.

In the first half, Fiorentina displayed exceptional performance, registering a total of 14 shots and compelling Bartłomiej Drągowski to make six crucial saves. The initial opportunity of the match fell to Albert Gudmundsson, whose shot narrowly missed Drągowski’s near post after a deflection. Following the resulting corner, the hosts took the lead in spectacular fashion within 12 minutes.

The ball reached Rolando Mandragora, who, after a single touch, struck from distance, sending the ball curving into the bottom corner of the net.

Mandragora attempted another long-range shot shortly thereafter, but this time Drągowski was able to tip the ball over the bar.

La Viola maintained relentless pressure, and just moments later, they netted their second goal.

Gudmundsson advanced with the ball and directed a shot towards goal, which took a deflection, eluding Drągowski at his near post and granting Fiorentina the aggregate lead.

Raffaele Palladino’s side should have added to their tally before the half-time whistle, as Drągowski managed to parry two well-struck free-kicks from Mandragora and Danilo Cataldi, in addition to thwarting Moise Kean on two separate occasions.

Kean also missed a promising header from a corner, while Panathinaikos’ best opportunity to respond came from Tete, who curled a shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

After a first half in which they were thoroughly outplayed, the visitors showed improvement after the break and nearly equalized on aggregate when substitute Fotis Ioannidis received a long ball from Drągowski, but his angled shot was deflected just wide.

They persisted in their threats as Ioannidis surged forward once more, selflessly passing to Tetê, whose attempt on goal was effectively blocked by Pietro Comuzzo. He was subsequently thwarted again at the back post by a crucial intervention from Robin Gosens.

Nevertheless, La Viola consistently posed a danger on the counterattack, and Kean secured their advancement by cutting inside and skillfully placing the ball past Dragowski.

As the match approached its final ten minutes, tensions escalated when the hosts conceded an unnecessary penalty after Azzedine Ounahi was fouled in the box. Ioannidis confidently converted the penalty, placing the ball into the top corner and misleading David de Gea.

Fiorentina's anxiety was alleviated once more when Filip Mladenovic received a second yellow card and was sent off for attempting to halt a counter-attack during stoppage time.

Consequently, Rui Vitoria’s team found themselves winless in eight away matches across all competitions, leading to their elimination from the tournament.
