First Olympic Medals Up For Grabs Amid Heavy Rain Disruptions

The opening full day of medal action at the Olympics was marred by heavy rain on Saturday, shifting attention from the spectacular but soggy opening ceremony to the various sports events.
Initially, 14 gold medals were scheduled to be contested, with the first set to be awarded in the mixed-team 10-meter air rifle finals at around 10:30 am local time (0830 GMT). However, the number of events was swiftly reduced to 13 as the persistent wet weather, which had also impacted Friday night's audacious opening ceremony along the River Seine, continued to pose challenges.
The men's street skateboarding competition, slated to take place at the Place de la Concorde in the heart of Paris, was postponed until Monday due to the overnight rain, organizers announced. Similar concerns loomed over the opening rounds of tennis at Roland Garros, where only two of the 12 courts have roofs to shield against the weather.
Friday's opening ceremony, featuring around 7,000 athletes parading along the Seine in a flotilla of boats, culminated in a stunning light show at the Eiffel Tower and a performance by Celine Dion. Despite the torrential rain, the ceremony received broadly favorable reviews, with France's Le Figaro describing it as "full of surprises but often disjointed." However, the International Olympic Committee had to apologize for mistakenly introducing South Korea's athletes as North Korean during the ceremony.
Sporting Highlights and Disruptions
Despite the weather, several sports kicked off their competitions, including swimming, badminton, rowing, cycling, hockey, basketball, and surfing—held nearly 16,000 kilometers away on the French Pacific island of Tahiti.
Swimming took center stage at La Defense Arena with the women's 400m freestyle, one of the most anticipated events featuring three swimmers who have held the world record. Australia's defending champion Ariarne Titmus, US rival Katie Ledecky, and Canadian teenage sensation Summer McIntosh were set to compete.
Other gold medals on the first night in the pool included the men’s 400m freestyle and the men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relays. Top tennis draws included reigning French Open champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz, with Alcaraz teaming up with Rafael Nadal in the men's doubles.
In shooting, Chinese shooters Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao were favorites for the first gold of the Games after their dominant victory at last year’s world championships. Medals were also up for grabs in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard diving final, where another Chinese pairing, Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen, were favorites.
The first cycling medals were to be decided with the men’s and women’s individual time trials on a challenging 32.4-kilometer course. French rugby fans eagerly anticipated the rugby sevens competition, with hopes pinned on Antoine Dupont leading the host nation to gold, starting with the semi-final clash against South Africa.
The wet weather added an extra layer of unpredictability to the opening day of medal events at the Olympics, but athletes and fans alike remained undeterred, focusing on the thrilling competitions ahead.
